Cristo Rei, Dili

(360+ reviews on the web)
Monument Tourist Spot
Perched atop a summit looking out toward the capital of East Timor, Cristo Rei stands as a symbol of the island’s relations with Indonesia. Reaching 27 m (88.6 ft) high, the statue was given as a gift to the east islanders by the Indonesian government in 1996, modeled on Rio de Janeiro’s monument of the same name. Climb the 500-step ascent and look out from the island’s peninsula, enjoying panoramic views of the Timor Sea. Take care on the uneven steps and bring plenty of water. Take a look at our Dili trip itinerary maker to schedule your visit to Cristo Rei and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Many locals and expats say if you haven't been up to the Cristo Rei statue in Dili, it's like you haven't been at all. It takes about 45 minutes to walk at an easy pace up the steps to the Jesus statu...  more »

  • The best beach in the city. It's amazing to have such a beach in the capital. Gets really crowded on Sundays as the Timorese enjoy spending Sundays on the beach
  • It's ok. View from the top is very good and if you are in Dili you must go. But lots of rubbish around and the carport was closed off with branches when I was there. Also very good advice here about not taking the rough dirt track at the end of the car park. The stairs up are at the start of the car park.
  • Historical landmark of Timor-Leste. Beautiful view of the cove and a great place to have a swim on the white sand beach. Can spot dolphin and whale during the mating season.
  • A good short half-day trip from Dili. Great views from the top. Some tips: - The entrance is through the parking lot, NOT further along the Cristo Rei road. That path gets rocky and leads nowhere - Take water. It's not a difficult climb, but Timor Leste is hot and you will sweat buckets. It's better early in the morning or late in the afternoon - At the twelfth station, there's a staircase leading down to the right. Follow it to get to Jesus Backside beach, which is a deserted, white sand beach with clear turquoise water
  • Definately a place worth to visit. Great view and the people in Timor Leste are lovely.
