Fortaleza Ozama
Visit Fortaleza Ozama, the oldest colonial fort in the New World. Dating back to 1502, the stone fortress protected Santo Domingo for centuries, and later served as a prison. View the powder house, the old cannons, and the ruins of the 18th-century living quarters. Climb to the top of the oldest building on site, the "Tower of Homage," for a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. Consider hiring one of the several guides outside the complex for a short tour of the grounds. The Ozama Fortress is a must see when visiting Santo Domingo. A self guided tour is best here as you can view all attractions in 30 minutes. The first attraction is the Gate of Charles III which was..... more »

A medieval jail, watch tower and actual powderkeg built in a renacentist XVI century city. The first in America. Full of sad history, of torture experience, but a monument to be seen. more »

Very interesting, I love history. STAY AWAY FROM TOUR GUIDES AT GATE. There are signs everywhere in Spanish and English that tell you want everything is. Plus figuring things out for yourself is always fun. Its 100 pesos to get in and the so called guides want $40 US dollars. I've been 4 times and learned about everything without there help, but their are employees walking around you can always ask questions for FREE

Nice monument but the grounds need better landscaping and more could be done in the area of tour guides . Still, it is a place to see.

It is one of the most employable places in the Colonial Zone, as it served as a fortress, housing and castle for the first colonizers of the island. They should provide more information about the roles of strength in the history of the nation.

Great Historical place, great view in a sunny day.

Beautiful historical place ! Luckily I had my boyfriend who visits a lot and knows about this place and what the history. No tour guides just random people over charging tourist for a simple tour. No maps at all due to their lovely government sending no money for funds.
