El Obelisco, Santo Domingo

(3.5/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Pay tribute to the lives lost and those who suffered under the regime of brutal president Rafael Trujillo in the 1930s at El Obelisco. Built during Trujillo's time in office to commemorate the president, the monument has since become emblematic of an altogether more peaceful anti-Trujillo Dominican Republic, with murals adorning the monolith displaying messages of harmony. Located on El Malecon, the obelisk is visible from most points on the street thanks to its height and striking colors. Put El Obelisco and other Santo Domingo attractions into our Santo Domingo holiday planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • It is an obelisk in honor wings sisters Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, called the butterflies Mirabal, who oppose the Trujillo regime, were killed. The day of his death, November 25 commemorates the day of non-violence against women. It was an Odyssey to photograph the obelisk, it is at a roundabout near the Boardwalk, where there is heavy traffic. But it was worth doing so.

  • When we visited the Malecon of Santo Domingo, we came across this cute Obelisk built in honor of freedom as we mentioned. It is striking the colorful paintings on their sides of opposing women in the dictatorship that suffered this country in the 1950s. It is not a place not to be missed but if you visit the pier at this point, it is a nice place to take some pictures.

  • The obelisk sits in the middle of a busy roundabout along the Malecon. The paintings on it are interesting but faded. It's not a destination by itself and you'll almost certainly see it if you're in t...  more »

  • Very representative of the city site, however can't give 5 because I consider that to be a city so important and with a symbol like this so beautiful and representative there is very little road safety on the road, my God hundred of people have to cross the street to lucky and truth because there is not a shred of traffic on a highway where a machine gun of vehicles circulating. It is that you almost die to cross.
