Fortaleza San Felipe
When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. Using our custom trip planner, Puerto Plata attractions like Fortaleza San Felipe can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Lots of good history, cool looking fort. Guys selling stuff outside the fort are pretty aggressive and annoying. more »

Very nice historical fort, clean and well maintained. The grounds around it are really nice as well, with a gorgeous view of the ocean and mountains beyond. The only downside is that the radio with the audio tour they give you is very poor quality and kept cutting in and out. But otherwise this is a worthwhile place to visit.

This fort was an interesting reminder that Spain once controlled the Island. It has the same basic style as the Spanish forts in St Augustine and Puerto Rico, except this one is noticeably smaller.
-
Nice place to visit. Looks much smaller than I expected. Entry ticket is 100 pesos. For this you will get an audio guide (English and Spanish) and headphones
-
A small historical site worth a brief visit. Beautiful waterfront view. A number of persistent vendors in the parking area.
-
Visited as part of a tour. The price is reasonable 100 Dominican Pesos. It's a self guided audio tour that tells you a bit about the history of Puerto Plata and the Fortress. It's a quick tour if you're into history. 20 minutes A few things to see around the fortress too.
