Fortaleza San Felipe, Puerto Plata

3.6
#4 of 37 in Historic Sites in Dominican Republic
When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. This Spanish Fort, is an interesting place from where you can see a sunset that stripe the magical. For its architectural, historical and cultural value, it deserves more attention in terms of its original conservation. It lacks historical information, anachronistic modern elements disrespectfully invading the interior walls have been included. You need maintenance. Missing campaign that once existed. Still it is an interesting place to visit, great pictures can be especially used in Schedule 6:00 in the afternoon with a warm color temperature.

Beautiful spot to take some great pictures. Be careful not to fall into any tourist traps with buying treats or donkey rides. Our friend was lifted onto the donkey by the donkey's owner and she then hustled money from us. But she was sweet so we didn't mind. There is a charge to enter the fort but there is no charge to hang out outside and take tons of pictures - also the washrooms didn't have toilet paper so bring your own.

Lovely view. Great idea of history. Horrible headphone set to listen throughout the tour. Great information but very old and broken.

Very nice fortress and you get a brief history of the Dominican republic. Would include as part of the trip to the malecón.
