Fortaleza San Felipe, Puerto Plata
(3.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. • Nothing much to see there. Not worth a detours in my personal opinion. They had audio guides but it kept losing audio signal.
