Fortaleza San Felipe, Puerto Plata

When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. • The Fort, Fortaleza San Felipe, was built around 1655 to repel PIRATES! If you love historic old stuff, you'll enjoy the audio tour. It takes around 20 minutes. (Sorry I don't know the cost, as it was...  more »
  • We visited Asia family Ford San Felipe! Pleasantly surprised entrance tickets to the Museum! You can use the services of the audio guide and listen to unique excursions! The historical facts presented in a very interesting way! Interesting for children and adults

  • It is a small castle that takes no more 15-minute traverse it. What is new is that entering delivered a kind of walkman with earphones in your language that will explain some interesting points that are labeled with a number.

  • Beautiful spot to take some great pictures. Be careful not to fall into any tourist traps with buying treats or donkey rides. Our friend was lifted onto the donkey by the donkey's owner and she then hustled money from us. But she was sweet so we didn't mind. There is a charge to enter the fort but there is no charge to hang out outside and take tons of pictures - also the washrooms didn't have toilet paper so bring your own.
  • Lovely view. Great idea of history. Horrible headphone set to listen throughout the tour. Great information but very old and broken.
  • We visited this wonderful place with family! Just love it! Old part of Dominican Republic!
  • Very nice fortress and you get a brief history of the Dominican republic. Would include as part of the trip to the malecón.
  • Such a nice place and beautiful park with a view of the mountains and great for built by the Spaniards to defend the city
