Historic Site Tourist Spot
When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. • We used Benito Tejada our taxi driver at 809 267 3751 to take us around. This is probably the best way to travel around town.  more »

  • Beautiful spot to take some great pictures. Be careful not to fall into any tourist traps with buying treats or donkey rides. Our friend was lifted onto the donkey by the donkey's owner and she then hustled money from us. But she was sweet so we didn't mind. There is a charge to enter the fort but there is no charge to hang out outside and take tons of pictures - also the washrooms didn't have toilet paper so bring your own.
  • Lovely view. Great idea of history. Horrible headphone set to listen throughout the tour. Great information but very old and broken.
  • We visited this wonderful place with family! Just love it! Old part of Dominican Republic!
  • Very nice fortress and you get a brief history of the Dominican republic. Would include as part of the trip to the malecón.
  • Such a nice place and beautiful park with a view of the mountains and great for built by the Spaniards to defend the city
