  • Being my first visit to Dominican Republic, I wanted to make cigar stores to bring back several decades to the Canada. Unlike Cuba, where the authenticity of the cigars is guaranteed by buying into "Casa them del Habano", the Dominican market fluctuates according to the haggling and neighborhood displays. After long the web to inform me of the usus and customs of the country in order to obtain the best cigars, one place stood out of the lot: El Cafe Cubano in Sosua. When I approached the taxi driver (and his sidekick), he strongly dissuaded me to go to Sosua, but to stay here, in Puerto Plata, in order to go to this place: Monsignor of Puerto Plata. Rather shady looking from the outside, it turned out that their cigar-making facilities are quite impressive. Initially, the driver invites us to enter the adjacent shop that sells jewelry and cigars, local and international. At the entrance, we're quickly surprised to find some semblance of a living room where several people, who are not customers, just seem to talk watching tourists. You quickly understand the scheme: while a visitor magazine cigars with the representative of the cigar factory (Hector), others are quick to attract the other visitor to the store in order to separate the group. I have simply nothing to say about the brand cigars Monsignor de Puerto Plata, quite wonderful, though relatively expensive for the place (but well below the price that can be found in the Canada). Where the cards are blurred, it is when it comes to talk of other brands of cigars. In order to put us in confidence, Hector is quick to show us imitations explaining at length and wide reasons and clues that they are fake and we quickly redirects to the "real"products... ATTENTION. Very carefully look at the label of the products you buy, even if they are allegedly of Dominican origin. Once home, I started to spy on a module Arturo Fuente paid about US $ 15.00 (approximately CAN$ 20.00) to notice that the label had a significant flaw: the paper was of poor quality and was done in double impression. Second risk factor: the payment. As you proceed to the cashier, you'll even not what happens so events happen quickly. As soon as the clerks will have written your invoice (on carbon paper in three copies) (green, yellow and pink), she takes your credit card, the plate on the invoice and contact a financial institution (unknown) on the phone and to which it transmits all payment information. By chance, once back in the country, everything was in order and in accordance with the sales agreement. Feel free to precede at your own pace and to tell them to slow down if you feel that you are not comfortable. However, if you plan to get there: pay cash. It is possible to pay directly in Canadian notes, no need to convert them before, they rely on the rate of the day (make sure you know before, question to have). Last thing: when back in the taxi, the driver had mysteriously parked the car three blocks away... On the way, he has "spontaneously" decided to visit the store of trinkets of her 'cousin'. While we were inside, he oddly insisted to keep our shopping bags. Be sure to turn down his proposal. In short: excellent, local products, sweltering sellers, good local experience and questionable business practices. Experience to repeat with certain precautions.

  • Great store with a nice jewelry and cigar selection. Overall experience was nice, but beware if you pay with a credit card. They have passed the transactions as a cash advance, which means I have been charged an additional fee. I also had to pay interest. Very dishonest in my opinion but he probably knew we'd only find out once we were back home, thousands of kilometers away.
  • Excellent place to buy Diamonds, Larimar, Silver, Gold, and Cigars!
  • Man i got some cigar from there and they are off the hook.
  • Great place!
  • This store has fantastic cigars rolled by hand sold under their house brand Monsenor de Puerto Plata. The gentleman who makes them is worked for Davidoff for years. This store is a destination for you if you are visiting Puerto Plata.
