Dominica Botanic Gardens, Roseau

Garden Nature / Park
Hailed as one of the best botanical gardens in the the Caribbean region, Dominica Botanic Gardens was built in 1890 and featured flora from around the world from the outset. Misfortune befell the gardens during Hurricane David in 1979, when the storm wreaked havoc and pulled down several old trees. Look for the huge African baobab tree, which fell and crushed a school bus during the storm. Flora in the gardens includes exotic plants like the bois kwaib, Dominica's national tree and flower, as well as some wildlife, such as lizards and hummingbirds. Check the calendar before you go to see if any cricket matches, parades, or music festivals will take place during your visit. • We walked through the botanical gardens then hiked up to Morne Bruce. There's not much to see in the botanical gardens by themselves.  more »
