Valley of Desolation, Morne Trois Pitons National Park

(50+ reviews on the web)
Valley Nature / Park
Contemplate the wondrous power of nature at Valley of Desolation, a valley of hot springs, steam vents, and fumeroles. Observe vapors rising from the ground and smell sulphur in the air in the spectacular setting. You can expect to be out for about 6 hours on the long hike, assuming you take it at an easy pace. Guides are available, but not essential, as the trail is easy to follow. Make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and beware of the uncertified guides at the start of the trail. For an easy and entertaining meal, consider bringing along some eggs to boil in the springs. • As I was trying to get there, my guide and I were hit by a tropical rain downpour, It caused a normally accessible creek to turn into an impassible raging river.  more »
  • I recommend a local guide to stay safe and to be sure you see all- including the hot tub like pools below the valley.  more »

  • Cool volcanic landscape, one of the best hikes I did in the country. People will try to tell you that you need a guide. You don't really, but if you're going to go without one, it would be a good idea to bring a GPS trace of the trail so that you don't end up stepping somewhere you shouldn't and getting badly burned. The trail is not at all well marked in the actual valley. Alternately, make someone you don't like go in front of you, just in case.
