Fort Shirley, Dominica

4.3
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Dominica
One of Dominica's most important historical sites, Fort Shirley invites you to step back in time and relive the island's turbulent history. Erected during the French and Indian War, the fort has endured its fair share of turmoil, and has changed owners many times. Walk around the grounds to find old rusted cannons, restored cannons looking over the bay, restored walls, and an old tap. Follow up with a visit to one of the many trails located just behind the fort. Find old ruins including the house of one of the old commanders of the fort. • This Fort is beautifully situated and is located 100 m above the Bay of island Cabrits Dominica, it's destroyed Harbor to reach at the moment only from the town in a 20 minute walk. From there one has a wonderful view over the Bay. At the moment everything regarding forest is and the houses to the poor towns are completely destroyed. Since the island is self-employed but come a few money from utilities and one has the feeling that the population not very motivated to remove the huge rubbish in forest, field and shore times at least on the main road. Nothing except the Fort to Lake actually.

  • Marvelous panoramic view of the Portsmouth bay below. Simply beautiful, great location for a picnic or photoshoot. Go with the entire family and spend a few hours. Explore the ruins of this war fort which have been professionally restored by our very own historian. Great location for wedding receptions. This has also always been the venue for the annual Jazz and Creole festival.
  • A great historical experience
  • It is a wonderful place if your there for a wedding reception as I was. Wonderful to be with others so if you plan on going there don't go alone.
  • Love the place, its filled with rich history, very peaceful, has a great views, great to explore
  • An interesting piece of history on Dominica. Not the highlight of my trip but if you enjoy old buildings and cannons more than the beach and water then this would be a good stop. Otherwise, it would probably be OK to skip this attraction.
