Ribe Vikinge Center, Esbjerg

#1 of 12 in Museums in Esbjerg
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Specialty Museum
Step back to an age of exploration, discovery, and trade at Ribe Vikinge Center. As you walk through the grounds of this historical site, you will learn about the basics of Viking life, including how they harvested, shopped, cooked, and played. Start at the marketplace from 710 CE where merchants from all over Denmark come to sell leather, bones, glass, and jewelry. In Ribe town, which represents life in 825 CE, you can meet inhabitants and craftsmen, such as the shoemaker and carpenter. Don't miss the Manor farm from 980 CE, where you will learn about the farming techniques and daily chores of Vikings life. You may be lucky enough to spot a Viking warrior or one on horseback riding through the town. You may also enjoy archery lessons and coin minting. Keep in mind that many of the actors here only speak Danish. Plan my trip to Esbjerg with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • The visit to Ribe Viking Center was very exciting. I was able to put my hand on various attractions and try archery, woodwork, knitting with needle. The vikings who were in the houses were happy to...  more »
  • Beautiful and huge outdoor museum with enthusiastic dressed people making you feel you are back in the viking age. For kids there is a treasure hunt available in many languages making it a fun way to discover the village and learn a thing or two about that era. Make sure to try the games from that time. It is a lot of fun to do!
  • We loved this place. It's a real Viking village and you can feel and experience those time and the lifestyle. Highly recommended!
  • Arrive early and ask the ‘Vikings’ lots of questions. Everyone we met spoke perfect English, and they were so informative. We arrived at 13.50, and didn’t realise it closed at 15.30. The falconry display was the best we’ve ever seen - very exciting and interesting, and in excellent English.
  • Spent the day there. Children really enjoyed learning combat skills with the vikings. Also plenty of opportunities to learn about how the vikings live. All the ‘locals’ we met explained to us about their lives and how they lived
  • Spent 3 hours here. Enjoyed it very much. When entering the buildings it was like stepping back a 1000 years. Make sure you arrive in time to see one of the daily shows (check webpage) the falconry show was good, lots of involvement for the smaller children, was also very informative. You can get food from the restaurant, or bring your own and eat it in the picnic area. Plenty of free parking on arrival.
