Must see · Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Architectural Building
Ribe Cathedral or Our Lady Maria Cathedral (Danish: Ribe Domkirke or Vor Frue Maria Domkirke) is located in the ancient city of Ribe, on the west coast of southern Jutland, Denmark. It was founded in the Viking Era as the first Christian church in Denmark by Ansgar, a missionary monk from Hamburg, under permission of the pagan King Horik I. The cathedral has experienced several damaging events throughout its long history and has been restored, expanded and decorated repeatedly. As it stands today, Ribe Cathedral is the best preserved Romanesque building in Denmark, but reflects a plethora of different architectural styles and artistic traditions. It ranks among the most popular tourist attractions in Denmark and has been awarded two stars in the Michelin guide.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed seeing this cathedral and learning about its history. The view at the top is worth walking up the many, many steps to get there!! The museum area is worth viewing, too.
  • Beautiful mosaics representing biblical characters, modern designs. Walk up the steps in the tower for a wonderful view of Ribs and the sea port Esbjerg. Don't stay there when it begins lightning ⚡☔☔⚡⚡
  • Very nice place to visit. Parking can be a problem. Best area to explore is arround the Cathedral. Some very fine old buildings. Plenty of places to stop and eat and drink. Just before you get to the cathedral stop at the park, it's not very big but worth a visit.😎
  • A really picturesque and beautiful church, right in the centre of the town. The square offers many services like nice cafes, public WC, benches and shops.
  • Absolutely stunning cathedral. You can walk up the church tower. It's a very historic cathedral in a very historic town.
