Learn about the poet's life from his childhood years as the son of a struggling shoemaker, to his prolific career as an author at Hans Christian Andersen Museum. The museum opened in 1908 in the small yellow house, which is considered his birthplace. A reconstruction of the artist's study displays personal items, including his walnut writing desk and his writing set--glass ink containers on a brass-ornamented wooden tray. Take the time to hear his tales, such as "Little Mermaid" or "The Princess on the Pea," at one of the many listening posts. The poet's creative range is also evident through his drawings and collages. Buy a book by H.C. Andersen, available in several languages at the museum shop.
