Koldinghus, Kolding
(4.3/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
At Koldinghus, see where Danish kings received foreign ambassadors, presided over the high court, and held banquets and balls. The castle was originally built as a fortress in 1268, but it also served as a royal residency. Today, it houses a museum. See the collections of old furniture, Roman and Gothic church culture, and old Danish paintings. A fire that broke out in 1808 left the castle in ruins. The north side, facing the castle lake, is the oldest part still standing. See how some other parts--such as the south wing and the chapel--were only partially restored in order to maintain the memory of this dramatic episode. • Koldinghus contains both history and present. Interesting information about the Castle as a Royal Castle, but also about the castle's importance to the city. There were several exhibitions and was preparing for a show in the restored portion. Definitely worth a visit.

  • In the autumn holidays going on there a lot for children at the Castle. All staff are dressed in copies of old suits. Costumed little princes and princesses playing around at the Castle. Musicians play and sing. In a room on one of the upper floors, visitors can also sample the suits, and be photographed. Is highly recommended. In the Knights ' Hall sits the King at the end of the red carpet. Children can be appointed to the Knights. There is a really nice Museum shop. In the basement is a restaurant. It serves a pretty good buffet.

  • If you are into the old stuff and reading a lot of history then it's nice. For us it was a bit to much. Couldn't find the right way to walk trough the building and to much reading. Would be nice to ha...  more »

  • This is a must see. They have done an amazing job at retaining the history of the building and have done a great job at presenting the building and the information about it. If you can, a must see.
  • Marvelous castle and very thoughtful restoration. It is a beautiful piece of Danish history, obviously well cherished. The new supporting structure inside is a masterpiece on its own.
  • History so well told, beautifully restored, always beautiful exhibitions. Plus a very very good restaurant.
  • Beautiful combinatie of Old and New!
  • Lovely to see as it's right in the center of Kolding. Bit pricey for what's on show in the museum but nonetheless it was nice.
