Koldinghus, Kolding

4.3
#1 of 64 in Museums in South Jutland
Castle History Museum
At Koldinghus, see where Danish kings received foreign ambassadors, presided over the high court, and held banquets and balls. The castle was originally built as a fortress in 1268, but it also served as a royal residency. Today, it houses a museum. See the collections of old furniture, Roman and Gothic church culture, and old Danish paintings. A fire that broke out in 1808 left the castle in ruins. The north side, facing the castle lake, is the oldest part still standing. See how some other parts--such as the south wing and the chapel--were only partially restored in order to maintain the memory of this dramatic episode. • Had not the big expectations of this, but I think everyone in the suite seems it was the right fun. If one has need of height might not have to go on the highest bridges, it sucks in your stomach when you look down. We had with us fan workshop and fencing school, took a lovely selfie in the old company's costumes and had answered all the questions in the quiz. It's that fast a couple of hours here, even with impatient children from 9-14år

  • Too expensive for an ordinary family on vacation. Not very sympathetic. Don't think it should cost as much to be cultural in Denmark.

  • Nice exhibition, neat and well maintained. Definitely worth a visit. There is currently an exhibition of HRH Princess gemalens collection from the East.

  • This is definitely in top 10 of Jutland's most exciting historic places to experience. The place communicates it's long history really well and succeeds to captivate and amaze visitors. I give five stars to this highly enjoyable attraction.
  • The Museum should have 5 stars, but the restaurant in the basement only deserve 3. We saw an exhibition of samples form HRK Prince Henrik's jade collection. I would say this exhibition is worth a trip to Kolding. The castle has be restored in late 1900's after a fire in 1808. The way this was done is also worth a visit. We had lunch buffet in their restaurant. However, they did not have my first choice of akvavit - and this is during the low season. Also my Svaneke "Mørk Guld" beer did not foam very much. I think it was simple stored too cold. The dishes on the buffet was tradtional Danish lunch dishes, such as heerings, frikadeller, flæskesteg etc. Nothing that looked special or local to the area. It was a disappointing experience.
  • Marvelous castle and very thoughtful restoration. It is a beautiful piece of Danish history, obviously well cherished. The new supporting structure inside is a masterpiece on its own.
  • A nice castle in the middle of the town with a great view of the city and the nearby lake
  • Love this place. Visit everytime I come back home to Denmark. Great restaurant located in this old castle and they always have some type of event going on. Last December they had a great Goerge Jenson collection.
