Trip Planner: Europe / Denmark / Jutland / South Jutland / Vejle / Jelling / Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church
A symbol of religious change in Jutland, contains monuments of both pagan Nordic culture and the Viking conversion to Christianity in Scandinavia. Now a World Heritage Site, this historic setting is a great place for a walk or picnic. Start at the Jelling burial mounds, which are important to pagan culture. Continue on to the runic stones, which are also pagan but represent the shift to Christianity. End your tour at the simple white church, which stands where the first church in Jelling was. Historic site is a must to see especially the new, to us, museum and surroundings that have been done since our last visit in '08. The museum was very interesting, interactive and well thought out. Kudos to the designers for putting this together.
Good historical place that was kept neat and clean. When we were there in late August it was not overrun by people so it was easy to see everything.
Simply an amazing piece of history; pretty amazing when you think about it. If you are on your way to Billund, make the stop. Be sure to read the signage for the mounds on either side of the church and make the short climb to the top to get the lay of the land.
Very well done inside the museum. Informative and engaging even for children.
There are two stones and they are cool to look out. The museams was amazing and totally worth it. I got a cool authentic viking coloring book from the gift shop.
