Must see · World heritage site · Castle · Tourist Spot
A place of pilgrimage for Shakespearean scholars from around the world, Kronborg represents one of Europe's most recognizable Renaissance structures and is a World Heritage Site. Built in the 1420s as a stronghold for King Eric VII, the castle shot to fame in the early 17th century when it inspired Shakespeare to use it as a setting for "Hamlet." Follow in Hamlet's footsteps in the soldier's quarters and storerooms, which stretch beneath the castle and contain a famed statue of the legendary Viking chief Holger the Dane. • One of the most interesting castles I've ever been to. Not very opulent or enormous, but very practical. Neat looking storage facilities surrounding the castle. Nice descriptive displays in each room. The cellars are the most interesting part of the castle for me and they are pitch black in a lot of parts. Follow the lighted arrows and don't get lost!
  • You must visit this amazing Castle. You will definitely need a full day ! It’s huge ! The gardens are magnificent. So much to see . Get there early it can get very busy . Take a tour it’s definitely worth it. If you love history you will love exploring this castle. Fabulous day out with the family.
  • Very interesting place of interest if you have an hour or so to spend. It's a nice day trip out of the hustle of Copenhagen and it is definitely a sight to behold. When we attended there was construction going on, however we were still able to walk around. We were not able to actual see where to buy tickets however it seems it's free to walk around on your own. They do offer tours that are at a modest cost which we would have considered of we had more time. Worth a visit for sure.
  • Definitely worth the trip out from Copenhagen!! Just a short walk from Helsingor train station you can easily spend a couple of hours here and there are several other attractions in the direct vicinity. You can take a guided tour in several languages which last around thirty minutes and gives you a real flavour of the place and its history. For fans of Shakespeare they've done their detective work on the probable reasons on how it came to be the setting for Hamlet.
  • A fascinating & very historic castle. A brilliant combination of military fortification and Royal palace. Not only the rich history of the Danish Royal family, but the links to Shakespear's Hamlet and the story of Queen Anne and her marriage to James VI of Scotland were most interesting.
