Frederiksberg Slot, Frederiksberg

4.5
Frederiksberg Palace is a Baroque residence, located in Frederiksberg, Denmark, adjacent to the Copenhagen Zoo. It commands an impressive view over Frederiksberg Gardens, originally designed as a palace garden in the Baroque style. Constructed and extended from 1699 to 1735, the palace served as the royal family’s summer residence until the mid-19th century. Since 1869, it has housed the Royal Danish Military Academy.Style and historyAs crown prince, Frederick IV had broadened his education by travelling in Europe. He was particularly impressed by the architecture in Italy and, on his return to Denmark, asked his father, Christian V, for permission to build a summer palace on Solbjerg as the hill in Valby was then known. The original building, probably designed by Ernst Brandenburger, was completed in 1703 for Frederick IV as a small, one-storey summer residence. The first major extension, when it was converted into a three-storey H-shaped building, was completed in 1709 by Johan Conrad Ernst, giving the palace an Italian Baroque appearance. It was Lauritz de Thurah who executed the third and final extension from 1733 to 1738 when the palace received extensions to the lateral wings encircling the courtyard.

  • I'm a bit surprised about all the good ratings. Compared to other castles in Copenhagen this one really isn't worth visiting. Its relatively small and you can't just enter it unless there is a tour which rarely is the case. Plus it's not really impressively looking, from some angles it even looks kind of dilapidated. The park behind the castle is beautiful though and definitely worth a visit but I just can't say the same about this castle.
  • One of the most beautiful parks I have seen in Copenhagen. It is so tranquil and atmosphere is amazing. People are kind, park is clean, grass always cut. In some parts you can even see some zoo animals like elephants. Must go to place.
  • Beautiful and tranquil. Lose yourself in the twisting paths in the garden and find your favorite spot to lay down and read a book, have a picnic or have a peak into the zoo's elephant enclosure.
  • Palace is not so good but park here is very good
  • The palace itself is not accessible but the gardens they stand in are worth visiting

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
