Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

4.2
#1 of 250 in Parks in Denmark
Set some time aside for fun and games at Tivoli Gardens, the second-oldest amusement park in the world. Established in 1843, the park sits in the heart of the city and offers not only traditional amusement rides and carnival games, but also flower gardens, food pavilions, and open-air shows. The most-visited amusement park in Scandinavia, this large venue attracts the majority of its visitors after dusk, when the lights come on and the area becomes one big stage for a range of cultural activities. Be sure to try a few roller coaster rides, but leave plenty of time for a show at the park's world-famous pantomime theater, built in the 1870s by celebrated architect Vilhelm Dahlerup. A usual attraction in Copenhagen, this is essentially an amusement park right in the middle of the city. Apparently, Walt Disney based Disneyland on Tivoli Gardens. Unless you want to actually partici...  more »

Such a fabulous time! We went every evening whilst in Copenhagen. Free entry with a Copenhagen Card (which is worth every kroner). The rides are either 25K, 50K or 75K each and there's also plenty of ...  more »

So much more than I expected! Very clean, well maintained and most importantly, great design. The rides are much better than typical amusement parks with very creative use of colors and lights. Restaurants are expensive but exceptional in food quality, service and comfort. The best time to visit is later in the afternoon through evening so you can see how the gardens transform from daylight to night with lighting. Highly recommended!

Such a great atmosphere for young and old. Not cheap but it's definitely quality, flexible pricing allowed us to purchase unlimited rides with either adult for our daughter. A huge amount on offer, even though it was busy there was plenty of space to walk about without being pushed around. Loved the refill slushy station and the range of places to eat. We tried out Prices Diner and the fried chicken was amazing!

Tivoli is truly an amazing place, one of the greatest highlights of the wonderful city Copenhagen. It has all the delights one could ever ask for, such as gardens of beautiful flowers, peculiar yet interesting birds, a concert hall, scrumptious restaurants with culinary masterpieces, and of course, exciting rides, including my personal favorite, a small wooden roller coaster from 1914. Visit Tivoli and you won't be disappointed.

This place is incredible. If you have the stamina and enjoy rides you could easily while away a whole day here. There's a huge variety of rides to do, lots of places to eat, live music, a light show (and fireworks sometimes) that will keep you busy for a long time. Some of the rides are not for the faint hearted but the plenty for even the most timid of people. It's lovely just to walk around and look at the lights. Have a look for the fir pits which you can toast marshmallows over! A must do!

Wonderful place. Every city should have a theme park in the centre. Some unique rides, good food, great place to relax and watch the world go round. There was the Danish equivalent of the rolling stones when we were there so they attract some great acts.

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
