Located on the waterfront of Copenhagen, Gefionspringvandet is the largest and most impressive fountain in the city. Designed by Danish artist Anders Bundgaard and installed in 1908, the fountain was donated by the Carlsberg Foundation in honor of the brewery's 50-year anniversary. Take a closer look at the sculpting, and notice that it depicts the mythical creation story behind the island of Zealand. Here, the goddess Gefjun has turned her four sons into oxen in order to plow the land, after King Gylfi promised to give her whatever territory she was able to plow in one night's time.
