Frederiks Kirke (Marmorkirken), Copenhagen

Church · Tourist Spot
Commonly known as the Marble Church, Frederiks Kirke (Marmorkirken) is an Evangelical Lutheran church with the largest religious dome in Scandinavia. Construction began in 1749, but due to financial troubles and unfortunate circumstances, the church remained unfinished until 1894. From the outside, the Baroque architecture is reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Make a quick stop inside to view the decorative lining of the dome, which spans 31 m (101 ft). Entry is free, but on certain days of the week you are allowed to pay a fee to climb to a viewpoint where you can enjoy bird's-eye views of the whole city. Check the website for further information, and for dates and times of services if you would like to worship. • Reminded me of Rome's Pantheon. It is unexpectedly full of light inside and smaller than on the photos.  more »
  • The huge dome is a real standout and can be seen from quite a way off, despite the chuch being quite hemmed in by other buildings. It is close to Amalienborg Palace and can be easily reached from...  more »
  • This is one of my favorite churches in Copenhagen. Somehow this big round church is coming across as very soothing and calm, even when there is a lot of tourists in it. It is free and open most of...  more »
  • A very beautiful building that to me is an architectural marvel... I know we have many examples of this throughout the world, but everytime I see a structure this old with such an amazing construction it blows me away. The dome seems impossibly high and intricate. Go inside for 5 or 10 minutes of silence and re-center yourself and enjoy the beauty.
  • Really great Church in the historical center, right next to the royal palace. If you are sightseeing, this will appear on your route anyway. Definitely with checking it out, although the exterior is more stunning than the interior, so don't feel sad if it's closed for visitors when you are there.
  • Very interesting church. Interior is so calm and the same time is really beautiful. The huge dome is very impressive. You should visit this church, because you can pray here and feel very quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
  • I read the one-star reviews for this place and I couldn't believe it. Some were saying it’s a ‘pretty ordinary place’ others stating it was a ‘waste of space’. One even called it the home of the infidel. All I have to say to those people is put your phone down, unplug yourself from a life of computer games and tv shows and ask yourself how many life times would it take you to learn how to build a place like this or even to create some of the astonishing artwork in side! Frederik's Church is exception, well-kept and refreshing.
  • Beautiful church, very interesting organ with the sculptures of an angel with swans on each side. At the edge of the dome there's an interesting inscription
