Frederik's Church, Copenhagen

4.5
Commonly known as the Marble Church, Frederik's Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church with the largest religious dome in Scandinavia. Construction began in 1749, but due to financial troubles and unfortunate circumstances, the church remained unfinished until 1894. From the outside, the Baroque architecture is reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Make a quick stop inside to view the decorative lining of the dome, which spans 31 m (101 ft). Entry is free, but on certain days of the week you are allowed to pay a fee to climb to a viewpoint where you can enjoy bird's-eye views of the whole city. Check the website for further information, and for dates and times of services if you would like to worship. Particular its circular shape, especially inside. I wasn't expecting it. Essential and with few furnishings. Bella. Opportunity to climb the Dome, for a fee.

Rich decor for a protestant church and also a good opportunity to rest in a calm atmosphere. There is no admission.  more »

This church is incredibly beautiful so make sure to give it a look! It's very close to other attractions so easily within walking distance. Great to have a seat inside for a bit, but not much else to ...  more »

Unfortunately we weren't able to go in as we were there around 6 pm and there's also some construction work going on around it. But just to admire this grande church from outside is a joy and continuing to the Amalienborg square you get some nice photos of both places.

A big and nice church. Frederick's Church has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31m. The dome rests on 12 columns

Quite a grand looking church. Didn't get to learn much about the Marble Church, as it's called but was quite awed by the interior. The dome is the centre piece of the church and one can just sit in the pews and admire the paintings up there.

Very impressive. If you are here you must visit it.

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
