Frederik's Church, Copenhagen

4.5
#5 of 327 in Historic Sites in Denmark
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Commonly known as the Marble Church, Frederik's Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church with the largest religious dome in Scandinavia. Construction began in 1749, but due to financial troubles and unfortunate circumstances, the church remained unfinished until 1894. From the outside, the Baroque architecture is reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Make a quick stop inside to view the decorative lining of the dome, which spans 31 m (101 ft). Entry is free, but on certain days of the week you are allowed to pay a fee to climb to a viewpoint where you can enjoy bird's-eye views of the whole city. Check the website for further information, and for dates and times of services if you would like to worship. • The Church of Saint Frederik is located halfway between the Kastelet and the center of the city of Copenhagen. Nice Interior and two beautiful statues outside.

  • It is one of the most striking buildings, its dome is very large and has similarity to which is in St. Peter's Basilica of Rome, is really a very beautiful place and its huge dome is one of the landmarks of the city.

  • The Church is made of marble. A tour that should be included. It does not take much time and is close to other tours. Sunday open at 12:00

  • Unfortunately we weren't able to go in as we were there around 6 pm and there's also some construction work going on around it. But just to admire this grande church from outside is a joy and continuing to the Amalienborg square you get some nice photos of both places.
  • A very nice church, inside it is also beautiful, you can also go on top, but only once a day at sharp 1
  • A big and nice church. Frederick's Church has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31m. The dome rests on 12 columns
  • Quite a grand looking church. Didn't get to learn much about the Marble Church, as it's called but was quite awed by the interior. The dome is the centre piece of the church and one can just sit in the pews and admire the paintings up there.
  • Very impressive. If you are here you must visit it.

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
