#3 of 7 in Neighborhoods in Denmark
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
Breathe in some fresh air at Christiania, a car-free neighborhood of free-spirited Copenhagen. Home to about 800 permanent residents, this district covers approximately 35 hectares (84 acres) and functions as a self-governing community. Famous for its relaxed atmosphere and brightly colored houses, the area attracts nonconformists from around the world with its collective workshops and communal living. Venture farther away from the neighborhood's famous main street to discover a world of green gardens, beer halls, music venues, and gift shops. Although you cannot drive into the neighborhood itself, you can leave your car just outside it and join a guided walking tour at the main entrance. Using our custom trip planner, Copenhagen attractions like Christiania can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Was there with my son, and it was both wonderful nature and colorful, was the entire trip around and it took some time, but it's all worth it. Can be recommended

  • We had heard a lot of Christiana and it is true that it is a bit unusual for the originality and the side shifted I recommend it, even a little tour, if you aren't comfortable, but on the other hand it feels insecure.

  • Visited Christiania for the first time and it was interesting to see this experiment or whatever you may call this place reached. Saw a lot of affected people and some people you wouldn't want to meet a dark evening. So I would not recommend anyone to go here at night. But apart from pushers, graffiti, and the generally dilapidated condition of the buildings, so it was quite nice. Think most of the green area situated in Christianina when you can sit on the water and have a good one

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
