Amager Strandpark, Copenhagen

4.5
#7 of 27 in Parks in Copenhagen
Stroll, run, swim, skate, rent a kayak, or go diving at Amager Strandpark. An artificial island was added to the original beach in 2005, creating a lagoon with shallow-water areas suitable for children. Cross one of the three narrow bridges to get to the 2 km (1.24 mi) long island. The northern section of the island features sandy beaches and sand dunes. The southern section offers recreation grounds, playing fields, a picnic site, and a promenade. Amenities include a small marina and parking facilities. • (Car) minutes away from the city centre a true oasis: clear water, clean beach, (free) parking - so you can finish well the afternoon after a busy sightseeing day: just jump into the water and then siesta... Class! Oh yes: Food there at the Lidl on main street super cheap... ;-)

  • Excellent place for water lovers and for fun activities. The view all along, more than 1 km long shore line, is a treat and an excellent place to spend a whole day. This place is just next to the Cope...  more »

  • Took the Vegetarian for a stroll after a visit to Den Bla Planet. It's only 5 mins from the metro. It was dark and a little bracing but worth the effort for some beautiful star gazing. Lovely views of the city too. Don't be worried about the lack of lighting tho, the Vegetarian has a mean right hook so I felt safe.
  • A complete revelation on my recent trip to Copenhagen. This artificial beach is stupidly easy to reach by bike, on foot, or public transport. Perfect for a bracing morning swim, in the late summer sunshine, taking in other swimmers, kayakers and people just out enjoying a walk.
  • Artificial, yet great area to escape the busy city. Nice and clean beaches, routes for cycling and running, good for scuba diving and many other water sports
  • This is a human-made beach park. But it works greatly, for the stroll, the swim, hanging out, kitesurfing, kayak renting, and many other things. An urban oasis, with nice, clean water.
  • Great place for a bike ride, even for tourists. Fifteen minutes from the center. Easy to reach. Excellent cycling routes along the beach.

Where to stay in Copenhagen

Most of the hotels in Copenhagen are located in the central Vesterbro or hip Indre By areas, though there are many more adventurous (and somewhat more affordable) places to stay during your vacation. As in the rest of Denmark, accommodations in Copenhagen are quite expensive. If you're traveling on a tight budget, consider camping along the Mølleå River or staying in one of the city's many backpacker hostels. If you prefer an inexpensive hotel, explore options in the Helgolandsgade and Colbjørnsensgade neighborhoods. For a taste of Denmark's art scene, head to the up-and-coming Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn areas. Travelers who like to stay outside of the main tourist areas should set their sights on one of the city's suburbs, like the northern section where you can stay at a beachfront hotel or on a houseboat.
