Hammershus, Bornholm

Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web
Hammershus played a central role in the centuries-long battle for power between Danish bishops and kings. The castle, surrounded by rings of fortifications, was erected in the 13th century on a cliff 74 m (243 ft) above sea level. It was long believed that the castle was built for the archbishop of Lund, but it is more likely that it served as a royal residence and a base for the Danish crusades. Walk along the remains of the great stone wall stretching 750 m (2,460 ft) around the castle grounds. From a grand "mantel" tower, you can take in a view of the coastline. • Great View over The bay. Castle ruin, built around 850 years ago. After sightseeing The Castle, walk Down to Hammershavn kiosk to have Quick snack or an icecream.
  • This 13th century castle/ fortification is sensational. It's a bit of a walk to the top but if you take it at a slow pace it's something that most people should be able to do - the elevation looks big...  read more »
  • We were 4 people on the Beach, the one had never been there before, it is an impressive large castle ruin, one senses still, how it has been, and what a view, we had fine weather, but that it was possible to see Sweden as clearly, it was a little surprising, despite the season, there were very many people visiting, school children came in buses We therefore had good parking facilities for a passenger car. The site requires that you have good legs, and must kamelhoverderne be seen too, so it's a bit of a challenge. The site and the entire area is a "must" when visiting Bornholm. Ronen
