Hammershus, Bornholm
(4.5/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Hammershus played a central role in the centuries-long battle for power between Danish bishops and kings. The castle, surrounded by rings of fortifications, was erected in the 13th century on a cliff 74 m (243 ft) above sea level. It was long believed that the castle was built for the archbishop of Lund, but it is more likely that it served as a royal residence and a base for the Danish crusades. Walk along the remains of the great stone wall stretching 750 m (2,460 ft) around the castle grounds. From a grand "mantel" tower, you can take in a view of the coastline. • The Nibelungen saga is know to many people. But this is the location where the Burgunders originate from. The views are spectacular as well so don't hesitate to go..
  • When you see today, one can well Hammershus be a little sorry that bornholmerne for centuries have seen the Castle as the oppressive authorities housing. First the Church, followed by the King's men and tax collectors, in 50 years Lybecks Commander and in a short period of time the Swedish Commander, before bornholmerne threw them out. Therefore, in the previous centuries, where the castle had lost its strategic importance, used it as "quarries" housed on the island. Sad today, where you would wish there was more left of it. Nature is amazing with the vertical cliffs down to the Baltic Sea and views all the way to Sweden on clear days. A must at first visit on the island of Bornholm.

  • Worth a visit.

  • There are toilets if you need it before or after a good walk around the ruins of Hammershus. Kiosk and serving is a bit expensive and they get enough problems with turnover when the new visitor center will be ready. The exhibition is interesting and there is a small souvenir shop.

  • Good, but a bit expensive (which may be due to their Hammershus-monopoly on beverages and ice cream).
