Aarhus Cathedral, Aarhus

4.5
Aarhus Cathedral is home to one of Denmark's great treasures--a 15th-century, carved altarpiece with movable sections. The outer walls of the cathedral and the chapels are the only original Romanesque elements that survived Gothic rebuilding. Look for the Lazarus window in the northwest corner, which probably served as a counter for sharing food with the lepers. The cathedral also houses the largest stained-glass window in Denmark, five wrought-iron latticework portals, and a pulpit carved with biblical scenes. Notice a votive ship hanging at the crossing as a reminder of those lost at sea. The wall paintings of St. Christopher and S.t Clement are the tallest in the country. • From its brick exterior you wouldn't expect to find the frescoes inside but these restores beauties are well worth a visit in this light-filled cathedral, which also hosts free concerts.  more »
  • Like all in Denmark, though:) Majestic. And always a lot of tourists here. Outside especially. Even early in the morning it is difficult without people capture.

  • Very impressive church in the Lutheran adapted style. Magnificent altarpiece and awesome ship. I would love to hear that organ someday, I imagine it is incredible.
  • Nice historic place to walk through for 15 minutes, even if you are not religious.
  • Very beautiful and a must see from the outside of you are visiting Århus
  • Large church/cathedral, pretty cool but i personally dont think its that exceptional
  • Beautiful church you can come to pray to God or just sight seeing for historical things inside.

Where to stay in Aarhus

For a price, you can stay close to the main sights of this charming city at one of the many hotels located in Aarhus' historical old town. While it may feel like a romantic small town with its cobbled streets, accommodations here, especially centrally located options or hotels along the marina, are just as expensive as in many other Scandinavian cities. Moderately priced hotels and hostels are limited, so if you are traveling on a budget, book early at a spot outside the city center. For nature lovers passing through the city, there are also campgrounds located near Aarhus in the beautiful surrounding forests.
