Vyšehrad is a historic fort located in the city of Prague, Czech Republic. It was built, probably in the 10th century, on a hill over the Vltava River. Situated within the castle is the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, as well as the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous people from Czech history, among them Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek, and Alphonse Mucha. It also contains one of Prague's oldest surviving buildings, the Rotunda of St Martin from the 11th century. The oldest buildings in Prague are located within Prague Castle. The Basilica St. Martin, which was built from 900-950, and the Church of the Virgin Mary, which was built in the year 870.Local legend holds that Vyšehrad was the location of the first settlement which later became Prague, though thus far this claim remains unsubstantiated.HistoryWhen the Přemyslid dynasty settled on the current site of Prague Castle, the two castles maintained opposing spheres of influence for approximately two centuries. Like this the second seat of the Czech sovereigns was established on a steep rock directly above the right bank of the Vltava river, in the 10th century. The zenith of Vyšehrad was during the second half of the 11th century, when Vratislav transferred his seat from Prague Castle, and the original fort was remodelled as a complex comprising a sovereign's palatial residence, church and seat of the chapter. The period of growth ended around 1140 when Prince Soběslav moved his seat back to Prague Castle.

  • This place is not very well known or frequented by tourists, most are Czech. It would also like the fact, that the Park is far from the city. We went there as close to our hotel. The site is free (except for visiting the Church). Ideal to spend a Sunday sunny when we already enjoyed the sights of prague. It offers views of the entire city of prague (better than the mess Tower) and more.

  • This is one of the best places to see Prague from-- sweeping views of this magnificent city. Perched on top of a hill near the Vltava river, much of the city is spread under you. There is a historic c...  more »
  • When in Prague, visit Vysehrad Park! This large area is at its most beautiful during the summer. Lots of walkways, spectacular view from the wall overlooking the city.  more »

  • Beautiful and historical place. Chilling on the grass on sunny day. Nice views. There is also a cemetery for famous czech people.
  • Amazing and beautiful place to see from distance and from within. Surrounded by beautiful gardens. Some reconstructions and structures inside are modem, which makes them standout like a pimple.
  • Beautiful place to visit. It offers great views of Prague, surrounded by nature, nice old church and cemetery to visit. It's a popular fine place, you won't regret it. I would recommend visits during warm weather but it's very nice in cold season too.
  • This is the place to go on your first day in Prague. Take the panoramic walk, enjoy the view to the surrounding city and the Vltava river, try and guess which spire in the distance belongs to which landmark. The trees, the grass, the peace of the entire place is not spoiled by huge tourists crowds and souvenir shops at every turn. Plan at least a couple hours for a walk here. Especially nice on sunny afternoons.
  • If you don't want to go with tourists to the Prague castle or you have some spare time visit Vyšehrad. Beautiful view, in spring or summer nice spot to make picnic. Good for sightseeing but also jogging.
