The Powder Tower, Prague

(4.3/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, The Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. • Great view of Prague. The stairs are narrow and tiring, but what a reward when you arrive. It's an attraction simple but great fun to do for even the view.

  • Thinking about how old this tower is is really awe inspiring. Climbing to the viewpoint next to it provides a nice view of the city.
  • Elegant tower with black colours, awesome design and richness of Prague architecture.
  • Beautiful medieval peace of architecture right in Prague center. It marks the border between old and new parts of the town. And you can actually go inside, but it's for additional fee.
  • Worth the few bucks to walk up to the top. Lots of tourist traps outside though.
  • It makes you feel you are somewhere middle of medieval and modern age.
