The Powder Tower, Prague

4.3
Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, The Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. Arrange to visit The Powder Tower and other attractions in Prague using our Prague trip itinerary builder tool .

  • This morning we visited Prague's old town, and this monument is part of it. Since it was very cold we decided to visit it (€4 per person). On top you see at 360 degrees all Prague, we would have lived this view if he hadn't done so cold, but it was satisfying.

  • Building whose history and whose style help create the magic of Prague. The powder tower was one of the 13 towers of Prague, rebuilt in the late 800 in present form. Definitely worth a visit if only for the beautiful panorama from its Summit. About €4 visits (otherwise included in the Prague card). To get to the Summit are about 200 steps of which the first approximately 50 very steep (pay attention to those who suffer from Vertigo). Well worth the visit.

  • Are entered here and have climbed the tower because it was free with the Prague card. Inside there is not much to see, with the exception of the many sculptures that hang on the walls. At the top you have a great view over the city.

  • Make sure you read about the Powder Tower and how it relates to the Old Town beforehand, since knowing the history of the place you are stepping into can improve the experience. Anyhow, the views from atop are delightful, though not open. A tip from me: if you are a student or a tutor, do ask for a discount. Bonus: Give it a try at the puzzle on the middle level (I couldn't solve it).
  • This is one of the gates to the old city and had to be restored after taking serious damage during the Battle Of Prague. That said, it has been done well and is faithful to the original. Were it not for the black colouring of the stone, it would look like a miniature fairy castle. I am told that this colouring is due to type of stone, which turns from yellow to black as it ages, and not due to pollution. Much of Dresden is built from a similar stone. The view from the top is also well worth the climb with great picture opportunities.
  • One of the most impressive historical building in this part of the city. Old entrance to the Old Prague City, was the part of the city walls. You can come in and climb over the top. Entrance fee. Great place to make some photos. Very popular for tourists.
  • Narrow staircase. One at a time. Good view from top.
  • Very nice and quick flashback into time. Not very expensive and nice view at the top.
