The Powder Tower, Prague
(4.2/5 based on 800 reviews on the web)
Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, The Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. • The tower was illuminated at night time so was particular attractive to see. You should make an effort to walk to it if you are at the Old Town Square. Very grand structure and worth a visit
  • You climb the tower with ease. For those who suffer to a certain level there is no lift. From the top you can enjoy a beautiful view in 360 ^ for Prague. The Council

  • The Tower of gunpowder from 65 meters of height, during the Middle Ages was one of the gates of the city. In the year 1475, was built in concordance with the Tower of the city old (a century more ancient). Both towers are what remains of the ancient fortification that protected the city (the truth is that we got by chance, touring the spectacular labyrinth of alleys). In the 18TH is the use as a deposit of gunpowder and hence its current name. Although it was restored, are still preserved much of its original decoration. A kind of bridge tower joins the neighbouring Municipal House. Here was the camino Real, journey performed the Bohemian Kings at the ceremony of Coronation which, through the old city, the Charles Bridge and Malá Strana, culminated in the Prague Castle.

  • Thinking about how old this tower is is really awe inspiring. Climbing to the viewpoint next to it provides a nice view of the city.
  • Elegant tower with black colours, awesome design and richness of Prague architecture.
  • Beautiful medieval peace of architecture right in Prague center. It marks the border between old and new parts of the town. And you can actually go inside, but it's for additional fee.
  • Worth the few bucks to walk up to the top. Lots of tourist traps outside though.
  • It makes you feel you are somewhere middle of medieval and modern age.
