The Powder Tower, Prague

4.2
Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, The Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. Arrange to visit The Powder Tower and other attractions in Prague using our Prague trip itinerary builder tool .

  • A very attractive on the inside, two interior rooms with beautiful stained glass Tower but empty, but with spectacular views from the rooftop and if they are when you sunset Prague with another color.

  • This is one of the original towers that surrounded the old city. The history just oozes out of it. We had some trouble finding it since it's difficult to find the names of streets and all of progress.  more »
  • The Tower has an interesting architecture, is distinguished by its very dark color, and, of course, in theory, is one of the landmarks of the city. I will admit, however, that the more I liked old cars parked on the street below it

  • One of the most impressive historical building in this part of the city. Old entrance to the Old Prague City, was the part of the city walls. You can come in and climb over the top. Entrance fee. Great place to make some photos. Very popular for tourists.
  • This tower is less crowded compared to old town bridge tower. The view is not superb but not too bad considering the price. Very relaxing.
  • Very nice view of the city in a quite accessible place. Authentic architecture and very interesting. It's a quick visit (20 min or less) but totally worth it. Mainly if you are just nearby in between some other touristic spots.
  • Views of the city from the top excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Lots of information. Recommended.
  • If you want a view over Prague this is a must. Have to climb a spiral stair case to get the top via the ticket office on first floor - it is well worth it for the view.

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
