Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, Powder Tower is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. Arrange to visit Powder Tower and other attractions in Prague using our Prague trip itinerary builder tool.

  • The Prasna Brana (Powder Tower) is one of the original 13 gates of the Old Town of Prague. It is situated a 5-10 min walk from the Old Square and is well worth going to have a look at.

  • There are so many buildings to see in this area... you can't really miss them, and will see them without even having to try... The tower is characterful...

  • A must see when you're in Prague. Sit right by the coffee shop next to it or enjoy the shops down the street for some great shopping. You will fall in Love with Prague. The architecture is stunning!
  • I got to visit this landmark of Prague in a quiet afternoon of September. I was the only one at that time. It has a spectacular view to the old town from the top. The entrance is about $5. I wish the exterior of the structure could be cleaned and washed to expose its original colors.
  • Really neat square. Near the old town and also the quieter streets that have a lot to offer. We walked from the national museum through here to the old town. Lovely walk exploring a beautiful city.
  • Do visit it at the early bird hours. You get to visit then at half price. The city looks very pretty from up the tower and inside the tower, its restoration story at several floors is very interesting.
  • Since I visited The tower of Saints Vito‘s Cathedral and many more viewpoints this tower didn’t have a special view for me. From the outside the tower looks really powerful and it is a place worth seeing. Near the tower is check national bank, Palladium the shopping mall, communism museum and the municipal house.
