Old Town (Stare Mesto), Prague
Categories: Neighborhoods, Landmarks, Tourist Spots
The oldest section of a very old city, Old Town (Stare Mesto) sits on the right bank of the Vltava River and contains most of Prague's major architectural landmarks. The central square of this atmospheric old quarter has served as the city's main marketplace since 1100 CE, though excavations of ancient underground cellars have revealed that permanent habitation probably existed here long before that time. Crisscrossed by a network of cobblestone streets, this historical neighborhood offers you a chance to discover a cityscape seemingly frozen in the 14th century. The easiest way to explore this labyrinthine quarter is to follow the signposted tourist trail, following a route once used by kings and queens on their way to coronation.
