National Theatre, Prague

4.6
The National Theatre in Prague is known as the alma mater of Czech opera, and as the national monument of Czech history and art.The National Theatre belongs to the most important Czech cultural institutions, with a rich artistic tradition, which helped to preserve and develop the most important features of the nation–the Czech language and a sense for a Czech musical and dramatic way of thinking.Today the National Theatre consists of three artistic ensembles: opera, ballet and drama. They alternate in their performances in the historic building of the National Theatre, in the Theatre of the Estates and in the Kolowrat Theatre. All three artistic ensembles select their repertoire both from classical heritage, and modern authors.Initial design and construction, 1844 to 1881The cornerstone of the National Theatre was laid on 16 May 1868, but the idea of building a theatre dates back to the autumn of 1844 at the gatherings of patriots in Prague. An application was submitted by František Palacký to the Provincial Committee of the Czech Assembly on 29 January 1845, requesting "the privilege of constructing, furnishing, maintaining and managing" of an independent Czech theatre. The application was granted in April 1845, but it was not until six years later – in April 1851 – that the founding Society for the Establishment of a Czech National Theatre in Prague made the first public appeal to start a collection. A year later the proceeds went toward the purchase of land belonging to a former salt works covering an area of not quite 28acre which determined the magnificent site of the theatre on the banks of the river Vltava facing the panorama of Prague Castle, but at the same time the cramped area and trapezium shape posed challenging problems for the designers of the building.

  • Beautiful interiors with extensive buffets during intermission open balconies with excellent views over Prague. It's nice when the buffet the girl spoke Russian) About Opera-a separate theme, very good! Friends amounted to keep me company, went to drink beer. And I don't regret that this evening was in the theater!

  • Unfortunately now we didn't had any performance to watch. But the building is very impressive from outside too - when we were on an opera performance we loved very much inside too.  more »
  • Gorgeous inside and out. If you have the opportunity to watch a show here, take it. A classically beautiful theater.  more »

  • Saw production of Carmen which was great but to be honest the most amazing thing about the theatre is the architecture and internal decoration. The word "sumptuous" doesn't even begin to capture what an amazing place this is.
  • Ohhh what a place! Loved it! The prices are super low for amazing operas and shows, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
  • Very beautiful building oozing with history. Built in a completely different era and I would say it is in impeccable shape.
  • I enjoy the live stream of Don Giovanni there. The building is mesmerizing too
  • Beautiful building, the theatre itself is wonderful and the acoustics were good, ceiling especially wonderful. We saw madame butterfly and the performance was amazing!! Seat prices tend to all budgets! A must see!

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
