National Museum, Prague

#36 of 150 in Museums in Prague
Learn about the Czech Republic's culture and natural environment by exploring the scientific and historical collections of National Museum. Josef Schultz designed this monumental Neo-Renaissance building in the 19th century as a symbol of the Czech National Revival. The grand entrance hall features a wide staircase, intricate stonework, and ceiling frescos. The museum houses almost 14 million items relating to mineralogy, paleontology, mycology, botany, entomology, zoology, anthropology, the arts, and archeology. Look for a 12th-century silver tiara in the archeology department and a gilded silver rhyton in the prehistory area. The theater department includes costume designs, music, memorabilia, and marionettes from the Czech puppet theater. • Because it was slightly to the snow and we just had enough of the cold wind we decided to visit this museum. My husband and I are all in within 10 min. There is nothing to nationals, just what stuffed beasts. Ideal for small children but not for us. Happy sat this in Prague only and cost us no "extra" money.

  • We visited the new home of the Museum, but what we liked most was the exposure of the Noah's Ark with all the stuffed animals, what fun we had and we enjoyed it, very nice staff but the exhibition

  • The exhibition is amazing and takes you from the medieval times to the modernity of German history. But I recommend you to take it easy because the exhibition is quite large, as I arrived in the middle to the end of the afternoon unaware, had to run a little at the end.

  • Fechado para reformas. Many monuments are being renovated for the country's 100th anniversary, in October 2018.
  • The historical building is under reconstruction and should be reopened next year. We went to see the temporary expositions in the annexed building, which, incidentally, used to serve as the parliament of Communist Czechoslovakia.Noe's Arch is nice if you have kids. As for the Retro (design) exhibition, we enjoyed the exhibition of toys of 1970s-1980s for the memories it brought.
  • we have been to Noah's Ark expo. it was nice for us and our 2years old kid who ran everywhere to salute all the animals... ;-) it was a nice hour time expo with english explanations.
  • The museum is currently under construction and they moved 2 exhibitions to the neighbouring building as I understood. The rest is unavailable. I found it boring as the one exhibition was mainly stuffed animals and the second one was about animals that live or would live in the area.
  • We were so excited to explore more of Prague. Wrong! The "museum" consisted of two exhibits; 50's clothes and off the ark. The clothes were half a room of older clothes, nothing noteworthy or worthy of being in a paid museum. And the ark was poorly done taxidermy, which has been seen countless times and has nothing to do with Czech anything. They tell you 3 floors are open for viewing but the 3rd floor is actually the stuffed lion and horse (cause they were a couple stairs up). Don't waste your $, I was embarrassed for them

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
