The National Monument on top of Vítkov hill in Prague's Žižkov district is one of the most important buildings related to the development of Czechoslovak/Czech statehood. It includes the third largest equestrian statue in the world, of Jan Žižka, who defeated King Sigismund in 1420 in the Battle of Vítkov Hill. The Monument also includes the Ceremonial Hall, an exhibition entitled Crossroads of Czech and Czechoslovak Statehood, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and other exhibition halls. The Monument was built from 1928–1938 in honor of the Czechoslovak legionaries. After 1948, it was used to promote the Communist regime. Between 1954-1962 it housed the mausoleum of Klement Gottwald. In 2000, the monument was acquired by the National Museum, which conducted a major restoration work. After over two years of reconstruction, the Memorial was opened to the public on 29 October 2009.The History of Vitkov HillVítkov has played a role in several important events in Czech history. The first written mention of Vítkov is from the 14th century, during the reign of Charles IV, who had vineyards planted on the hills around Prague. The vineyards stretched from the foot of Vítkov through Vinohrady to Karlov. As well as grapes, Vítkov hill was also used for the cultivation of hops.

  • An essential place to meet the contemporary history of Prague, Czech Republic and Europe. A National Museum, a former mausoleum where the mummy of Gottwald, was preserved and a viewpoint with cafeteria and some incredible views. Don't waste time in the tourist area of Prague (synagogues) and dedicate it to things that are worth the penalty.

  • Cool monument perched on a hill with beautiful views over Prague. A delightful walk on steep, winding paths up to the monument.

  • This is probably the coolest monument in the entirety of the Prague area. full of history and communist memorabilia. They have a great permanent exhibition there with usually a great seasonal one as well. The view from the top is also fantastic. It is a solid move if you are visiting Prague.
  • A spectacular monument. Granted the climb to the top of the hill is strenuous, it is well worth it. It is deceptively big, a lot of it must go under the hill. There is a lovely cafe on the 3rd level. We had a large slice of cheesecake and a Coke Zero for 97Kc
  • It’s a pity that film screening is out of order(don’t know for how long) so in certain section, you must literally read all the information( if you want to know more but you don’t have any basic background information) Secondly, The circulation is very bad, doesn’t have a clear notice which way to go. So I continuously saw the guard complaining about people are going the wrong way. 3. Some of the explanatory letters on the floor has gone off, it should be restored ASAP. Well wouldn’t say it’s good place for kids but educational. P.S you need to take off your cap while visiting, otherwise will be scolded.
  • One of the top monument, which I offer to see, with nice view to Prague. Good place for relaxing and usually it's not full of people. It could be a good place for evening walk specially in summer. Enjoy.
  • One of the many viewpoints Prague offers. It is interesting from the historical point of view as in 1420 one-eyed Czech general Jan Žižka defeated here catholic forces led by King Sigismund in the Battle of Vítkov Hill. The place serves as a war memorial with a museum inside and an observation place and a caffe on top of the building with even a better view. There's a third biggest equestrian statue in the world. If you're close, give it a try.
