Kostel sv. Mikuláše, Prague

4.5
#7 of 73 in Historic Sites in Prague
An outstanding example of Baroque architecture in Central Europe, Kostel sv. Mikuláše dominates Prague's skyline with its iconic green dome. Constructed in the early decades of the 18th century, the structure replaced a Gothic church also dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building's star attractions are its frescoes, sculptures, and a 4,000-pipe organ, reportedly played by Mozart in 1787. The ceiling frescoes, created by Johann Lukas Kracker, include an image of a Jesuit monk who, despite repeated injunctions not to do so, hid behind one of the columns and secretly watched the artist at work. Try to spot him by standing directly under the domed ceiling or by climbing to the church's viewing gallery. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Prague holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kostel sv. Mikuláše and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

There was no scaffolding in evidence when I visited in October last year and no large groups of Koreans either, although there were plenty of Chinese! Putting that to one side though, this church real...  more »

Elegant Baroque building, one of the oldest (dating back to 1300 in the original) of the old city-located at the corner of Old Town behind the clock tower-long has undergone vicissitudes, having been remodelled several times, Deconsecrated, intended for military use and civil then returned to the cult, first leased to Russian Orthodox rite church and now home of the ceremonies with the Hussite rite. Inside is frescoed, enriched by statues of various saints and presents a valuable altar, but what is particularly striking is the spectacular crystal chandelier (produced in Harrachov glassworks in the late nineteenth century) placed in the middle of the aisle, about 4 meters in diameter, bearing a Crystal Cross gift of the last Tsar when the Church belonged to the Orthodox rite. It can be visited only up to sixteen because inside almost daily classical music concerts are held.

The Church must be lavish... We make the km walk in prague to visit. A Panel has the entrance indicates the presence of a scaffold. We take our tickets (290 kr) and we hit a total refevtion nave. The choir still accessible but limit and masquees organs. In normal trmps such a church would be worth 4/5. The ela only vait is no more than 2/5 with the sentment of s being injured.

Astonishing church from both outside and inside. The opening hour of the church may differ to the castle. So make sure to get their earlier if you want to check this beautiful church!

It's beautiful on the inside as well, after so many places milking tourists with admissions, we had to give it a shot. Access is free but restricted. I just find it hard to believe that they charge people to enter a church, a castle, a cemetery, a tower...

Most beautiful church we saw in Prague. Very nice also that you can enter the gallery on the first floor.

Prague has many Roman Catholic churches and St. Nicholas is one of the most beautiful. The inside is being renovated but still could be entered. This is the only church that we have to pay for entrance.

Breathtaking artwork! Ceiling floor and walls! Also don't forget to climb the tower and see the entire city! Great view!

For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings.
