Kostel sv. Mikuláše, Prague

4.5
An outstanding example of Baroque architecture in Central Europe, Kostel sv. Mikuláše dominates Prague's skyline with its iconic green dome. Constructed in the early decades of the 18th century, the structure replaced a Gothic church also dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building's star attractions are its frescoes, sculptures, and a 4,000-pipe organ, reportedly played by Mozart in 1787. The ceiling frescoes, created by Johann Lukas Kracker, include an image of a Jesuit monk who, despite repeated injunctions not to do so, hid behind one of the columns and secretly watched the artist at work. Try to spot him by standing directly under the domed ceiling or by climbing to the church's viewing gallery. By using our Prague road trip planning website , you can arrange your visit to Kostel sv. • This is truly a unique Temple, you might say, one of the most beautiful and bright in the Czech capital. Been here several times, visiting him and his wife nearly every visit to Prague (my first review "Baroque Temple" for "TripAdvisor" about this attractions posted by June 16, 2016). In the Czech capital not so many baroque temples, or rather, their almost there, but not only this makes the Church of St. Nicholas. First of all, she has an interesting story. The Church is situated on the site of one of the oldest religious buildings in the Czech Republic and Prague is here used to be a Christian Church, mentioned in the old Chronicles relating to the 13th century. The Church was rebuilt many times, most recently in 1732-1737 Gg. by the famous Czech architect Kilian Dientzenhofer (he did not have time to complete the reconstruction of the building after his death realized his son Ignác and son-in-law Anselmo Lurago). Thanks to this reconstruction, the Church got its main view, and the eventual champion style was done in the 18th century, Baroque. This was quite the neighbouring palaces, located immediately on the malostranske square (then known as Italian Piazza). Namely, located opposite the Palace of the Liechtenstein dynasty, as well as palaces Smirzhickogo, Shternbergskomu and Gremlingofskomu. "Italian roots, for example, can be seen in a giant Dome Church, sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. It is very similar to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. You can tell much about the history of this monumental architectural monument. However, I would like to focus on the "Orthodox" component of the story. Since the late 18th century, the Cathedral was fully experienced the oppression of the Austro-vengreskoj monarchy, since verdik ...

  • Church is very beautiful with golden decors and marble sculptures everywhere. except it's interior is under construction and renovation. It would've been a 5 star site. But regardless, you should not miss it.
  • I refuse to pay that much money to go see a church. It should be free to enter and, if they need the money, they should treat their visitors well and they will receive generous donations.
  • Great place, initially not sure about paying the entrance fee but it was worthed. 4 out of 5 since the main fresco is being repaired (not disclosed)... It is valuable to read the brochure for a deeper appreciation of a great Baroque display.
  • This church is just on the edge of the old town square. Though small it is quite impressive. The interior decoration is impressive and the church in general is maintained quite well considering its age. From time to time live orchestral concerts are held here. Be sure to catch one if they are available!
  • Well worth visiting. This is a very interesting little church on the edge of the old town with a beautifully decorated interior. I couldn't find out much about its history in my guide but it is still worth looking at and in a very nice setting.
