Kostel sv. Mikuláše, Prague

Architectural Building · Hidden Gem · Church
An outstanding example of Baroque architecture in Central Europe, Kostel sv. Mikuláše dominates Prague's skyline with its iconic green dome. Constructed in the early decades of the 18th century, the structure replaced a Gothic church also dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building's star attractions are its frescoes, sculptures, and a 4,000-pipe organ, reportedly played by Mozart in 1787. The ceiling frescoes, created by Johann Lukas Kracker, include an image of a Jesuit monk who, despite repeated injunctions not to do so, hid behind one of the columns and secretly watched the artist at work. Try to spot him by standing directly under the domed ceiling or by climbing to the church's viewing gallery. By using our Prague road trip planning website, you can arrange your visit to Kostel sv. • What got my attention with this church was the dome. The green dome had traces of gold which was very eye-catching. The spires by the dome were also quite nice. The carving all along the side and front of the church are quite remarkable. We didn't get a chance to take a look inside but I would guess it would be as spectacular. The column of the Holy Trinity is outside of this church.
  • We thought it would be good to experience a concert while in Prague and were approached by ticket seller as we passed this Church, so it was a spontaneous decision to buy tickets with out much knowledge. The venue is stunning at night, there were comfortable cushions on the pews and we had a front row seat. There were 7 members of the chamber group, a soprano and an organist played. We were enthralled! The acoustics were excellent, the music was beautifully played with great skill and the program would be familiar to most people. It was super to hear the organ being played. A great memory of Prague.
  • The Magnificent and Stunning Church with an unexpected history 1. The Church was magnificent and it was built in Rococo and Baroque architecture. The church interior was so grand and gorgeous. I love it inside out. One of the best Prague Baroque architecture. 2. There is also a tower that requires you to walk hundreds steps. When you walk up, the scenery outweighs the price (You don't need to pay if you have Prague pass) The scenery is spectacular and overlooks the Charles Bridge. 3. I am not going to tell you about what exactly happened at the top of the Church while cold war. You can find out yourself and you would be stunned by the history. Enjoy :)
  • Beautiful, stunning, amazing! What words can you use to descibe this magnificent church. You have to see it to understand. I was completely amazed. This church was rebuilt on the same site as a previous church that was also dedicated to St Nicholas. It was built between 1704 and 1755,and has been described as the greatest example of Prague Baroque architecture. There is a tower which you can climb, and costs 100 Czech Crowns. There are about 215 steps, so be prepared for those. Once up in the tower, the views of the city are amazing. Did you know that back in the Communist era, the tower was used as an observatory for state security, as it was possible to keep watch on the American and Yugoslav embassies, and also observe the access route to the West German Embassy.
  • Wow. Just wow. This church is absolutely amazing. I was so shocked by the beauty of the place. Everything is so beautiful and you really don't know where to look. I think it's the best church of Prague!
