Combine a classical concert with a guided tour in English of Klementinum, the largest area of historical buildings in the old town. Many of Europe's great astronomers, scientists, musicians, artists, and philosophers have studied and worked here since medieval times. Climb the 68 m (223 ft) high astronomy tower for views of the city center. As you walk around, you'll find two Baroque churches, a Baroque library with ceiling frescos and rare globes, and a mirror chapel. The chapel hosts classical concerts played on its two 18th-century organs. We waited more than an hour because the tour started late. After the first exposure in English we asked if he could give us some insight into Italian: he replied that it was all written in wretched leaflets that we had been in hand. The tour continued and the Guide, even knowing that we were Italian and that we did not understand English, he continued in English. The only thing that was said in Italian: the tour is over, you can go whenever you want. Some have waited an hour for not understanding anything about anything and you have paid the full fare ticket was a tease and a theft. Do not recommend to anyone this visit.
This structure is absolutely stunning. I came to the building specifically to see the baroque library. Unfortunately, you only get a brief moment to see the library itself before you are ushered to other areas, and you are not allowed to take photographs. You can buy a postcard from the front desk, though. The only way to see the library and famous tower is by taking the guided tour, offered in English. Our guide was a local who spoke excellent english and was very helpful, fun and enthusiastic. I would definitely recommend a visit here. Of note, there are a lot of steps to climb. If you are unable to climb stairs, this tour may not be for you.
The Baroque library that is super impressive, but you can't enter nor take any picture. The old astro observatory cool for it's historical significance but doesn't look like much. The view on the top of the tower is nice, much like that from the town hall. Must enter through their guided tour and the ticket sells out about an hour in advance (August 2018).
Funny how people’s opinions differ. Though I have to admit the Library was stunning , and the view from the top of the tower was nice, I felt that the 300Kć it cost was a bit much, especially considering the view of the library was brief and from a small space near the doorway. There was very little else to see, just a few astronomical and scientific apparatus and a couple of reproductions of ancient texts. It didn’t help that although our guide, whose English I am sure is quite good, did his best to share his knowledge with our group but his accent was so broad and coupled with the echoey high ceilings it was very hard to understand a lot of what he said. Just be aware, if you aren’t a cheapskate like me, and you do decide to go, that there are quite a few winding and steep staircases you need to be fit enough to climb. Also you are not aloud to take photos of the library.
Very interesting place! Don’t plan on the tour if you are not able/not comfortable climbing many narrow staircases (one spiral, some steep). If you are physically able though, you will be rewarded. Just put your phone/camera away (you won’t be allowed to take photos anyway until you’re in the tower), and enjoy the BREATH-TAKING library! I could have stood in the doorway (that’s as far as you’re allowed for good reason, they are very old texts and the room conditions are carefully maintained), staring at the artwork, clocks, globes, books, etc forever. Yes, I wish I could have examined everything up close, but I understand the reasons why, so I enjoyed the view I had. We also climbed the astronomy tower and went outside on the narrow ledge/walkway to admire and take in the 360-deg city view. Amazing! Well worth the cost and the climbing! Definitely recommend if you’re into books and/or views.
The building complex has a lot of history. In order to view the inside you need to get the guided tour which wasn’t very expensive. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all of the groups questions in near perfect English. Up at the top of the observation tower you will get some amazing views of the city. The baroque library is stunning. You’ll only get to look at from a platform in the doorway. This is to reduce humidity. We took this tour pretty much just to see the library! (No photos for much of the tour unfortunately)
