The Jan Hus Memorial stands at one end of Old Town Square, Prague in the Czech Republic. The huge monument depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile 200 years after Hus, and a young mother who symbolises national rebirth. The monument was so large that the sculptor designed and built his own villa and studio where the work could be carried out. It was unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus' martyrdom. The memorial was designed by Ladislav Šaloun and paid for solely by public donations.Born in 1369, Hus became an influential religious thinker, philosopher, and reformer in Prague. He was a key predecessor to the Protestant movement of the sixteenth century. In his works he criticized religious moral decay of the Catholic Church. Accordingly, the Czech patriot Hus believed that mass should be given in the vernacular, or local language, rather than in Latin. He was inspired by the teachings of John Wycliffe. In the following century, Hus was followed by many other reformers - e.g. Martin Luther, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli. Hus was ultimately condemned by the Council of Constance and burned at the stake in 1415. This led to the Hussite Wars.

  • Will be looked at this picture many times while in Prague. Watching this picture I knew nothing, every time, learned about the history of Czech Republic and people's intelligence. Is just still do not know, but now I get courage. Prague revisited, first here? I wonder if Charles Bridge. I wonder if now we'll watch slowly from the cafe.

  • An impressive memorial to one of the most inspirational Czechs in history, Jan Hus. Part of the massive monument depicts a woman nursing her baby, which is there to symbolize national rebirth. Additionally, since its unveiling in 1915, the monument has served as a symbol of dissidence against oppressive regimes. I was fascinated to learn that during communism, sitting at the feet of Jan Hus was an act of protest against the communist rule.
  • We could see this monument from our apartment window. Had to find out more about it. Has an interesting game history
  • Impressive sculpture. I was surprised to learn that Jan Hus actually fought against indulgences and wanted a Bible translation even before Martin Luther.
  • The large monument in the middle of the Old Town Square in Prague is the statue of the reformer Jan Hus (John Huss), one of the most important personalities in Czech history. A hundred years before the Protestant Reformation was started by Martin Luther, Jan Hus was burnt as a heretic for reformist ideas.
  • Huge monument in old town square. Impressive to look at and walk around. Thankfully benches all the way around it to rest and take in everything going on in the square
