The Jan Hus Memorial stands at one end of Old Town Square, Prague in the Czech Republic. The huge monument depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile 200 years after Hus, and a young mother who symbolises national rebirth. The monument was so large that the sculptor designed and built his own villa and studio where the work could be carried out. It was unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus' martyrdom. The memorial was designed by Ladislav Šaloun and paid for solely by public donations.Born in 1369, Hus became an influential religious thinker, philosopher, and reformer in Prague. He was a key predecessor to the Protestant movement of the sixteenth century. In his works he criticized religious moral decay of the Catholic Church. Accordingly, the Czech patriot Hus believed that mass should be given in the vernacular, or local language, rather than in Latin. He was inspired by the teachings of John Wycliffe. In the following century, Hus was followed by many other reformers - e.g. Martin Luther, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli. Hus was ultimately condemned by the Council of Constance and burned at the stake in 1415. This led to the Hussite Wars.

  • This memorial sculpture is in the center of the square that everybody goes to. It's important historically and good art, but there are big crowds around. Still, go!  more »
  • For those accustomed to the monuments of the Italian squares leave a little disappointed, however the work is beautiful while showing off the old town square as well as the memory of a fictional history of Prague. Definitely worth visiting.

  • Lots of history and significance to this monument. Easy to find and enjoy while in the main square - make sure to google it or ask your walking guide about it as it is an important part of Pragues history. Hard to miss, and worth a stop.
  • Prague is without a doubt, one of the most captivating and beautiful places on earth. Intriguing in every way.
  • I have to admit I haven't ever noticed this statue before looking it up on Google Maps despite my endless visits to Old Town Square. This time I tried to admire it and I have to say I feel like I've missed out before. It's a pretty nice statue. Bigger than your usual one, but it's surrounded by a tiny fence so it makes it look bigger. It's a decent sight, but I can't say I'd call it "majestic" to bee honest.
  • Central area- downtown amazing and interesting

For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings.
