Hunger Wall, Prague

4.1
#167 of 745 in Things to do in Prague
Originally intended to help defend Prague Castle and Mala Strana against attack, Hunger Wall stretches through Petrin Park from Strahov to Ujezd. It was built between 1360 and 1362 on the orders of Charles IV in a time of severe famine. Enjoy a stroll through the park along the length of the mighty wall, and admire the strength and history of this ancient fortification. The construction work helped provide a livelihood for the some of the city's poorest residents, hence the structure's unusual name. It underwent repairs in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. You will pass by this easily if you are on your way to Petrin hill. If not, there's not a lot of point to come here. They really hate the communist.

This wall has a long history behind it, but nowadays it separates gardens and Petrin from the town.

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
