The House of the Black Madonna is a cubist building in the "Old Town" area of Prague, Czech Republic. It was designed by Josef Gočár. It is currently in use as the Czech Museum of Cubism and includes the Grand Café Orient restaurant on the first floor. The House of the Black Mother (U Černé Matky Boží), sometimes referred to as Black Mother of the Lord, was designed and built between 1911 and 1912 on the corner of Celetná Street and Ovocný trh. Josef Gočár built the house as the first example of cubist architecture in Prague, and it remains probably the most celebrated. Even without historical details of the baroque building surrounding it, the House at the Black Madonna maintains the atmosphere of the neighborhood. The house was given its name by the stone sculpture that originally adorned one of the two Baroque buildings on the same lot. After many years altered use in the interwar period and under communist rule, the house was closed in January 2002 and re-opened after extensive restoration in November 2003.HistoryGočár designed the house in mid-1911 at the age of 31 for the wholesale merchant František Josef Herbst. Herbst chose Gočár to build his department store in the Old Town along the old coronation route because of the architect’s earlier success with a similar shop in Jaroměř, built in 1909-1911. Because of its prominent location in the heart of the city, Gočár’s building was subject to strict harmonization rules requiring that the department store not conflict with its historical setting. The building thus uses the language of baroque architecture in a Cubist form, thus exemplifying the ‘contextualization’ of Cubist architecture.

  • We where looking for the famous traditional pork knee and had bad experience in other places. Desperate, we decided to come here, expecting high prices, but where surprised to find that price were even lower than in other places but the quality is uncomparable. We got the best pork knee - it was crispy and tasty. In addition we had a desert which is prepared by very nice lady and I want to say that it taste exactly how it looks! Highly recommend this place as a romantic place and place to meet with friends! You will get a nice atmosphere that would not be possible without great and friendly staff.
  • My husband and I were apprehensive to try based on reviews describing poor customer service. However, we decided to dine at the Black Madonna, and had the most amazing meal and phenomenal waitstaff. All servers were courteous, and went over the top to check in on us and make sure we had everything we needed throughout the multiple courses we ordered. While we were at the restaurant there was a small mixup with our order, but our server insisted upon comping us two glasses of wine for what was ultimately only a very slight delay (which we honestly would not have detected ourselves had they not apologized for it!) Another party of tourists were seated near us and the waitstaff dimmed the lights sing and bring out dessert with candles to celebrate one of the traveler's birthdays. The atmosphere and the food were both stellar. Would highly recommend!!
  • Went there for desert and coffee. The staff was polite and the food and coffee were good. Great interior design and clean toilets.
  • One of the staff was rude .. he didnt show any respect to us .. when we ask for the bill they keep us waiting as well ... for the food good. Not recommended for classy people
  • We were there for coffee and cake. The small cakes displayed in the window were really amazing and worth every cent. Decoration was also awesome.

Where to stay in Prague

As one of Europe’s main tourist destinations, Prague offers a selection of accommodations to match its popularity, from luxury hotels to very affordable hostels. For an authentic Prague experience, stay at one of the guesthouses or boutique hotels housed inside the city's historical buildings. You'll find many lodgings concentrated around the most popular sightseeing areas, such as the Old Town, the Lesser Town, and Prague Castle, but there are also a good number of them in other neighborhoods. The best way to make Prague feel like home is to rent a fully furnished apartment.
