The Bedřich Smetana Museum in Prague is a museum which is dedicated to the life and works of famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana . It is situated in the centre of Prague in a small block of buildings right next to Charles Bridge on the right bank of the river Vltava in the Old Town .The building, which was formerly owned by Prague Water Company, has housed the Smetana Museum since 1936. It is a grand building in the Renaissance style. The main part of the museum exhibits are on the first floor. The upper floors house archive material relating to Smetana, providing a centre for research.Exhibits include copies of letters, photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to Smetana’s life as well as various possessions including his earbone . There are also folders on music stands which contain material about some of Smetana’s most famous works. The visitor is able to listen to extracts from these works by zapping the required music stand with an electronic baton.Smetana was the leading Czech composer at a time when Czech Nationalism was allowed to be expressed through the medium of the arts, which had so long been dominated by the official language, German. The Czech people were searching for their national identity and for the first time had the opportunity to perform plays and operas in the Czech language. The embodiment of this movement was the National Theatre which opened in November 1883 with a performance of a specially written opera by Smetana, Libuše, which deals with the legendary story of the foundation of Prague. His six symphonic poems Má vlast describe various aspects of his homeland: its countryside and legends. The second of these tone-poems, Vltava, is especially popular. The main tune is broadcast over the public address system at Prague’s main railway station.

  • Although this museum IS on the smaller side, it has an excellent collection of correspondence, scores and artifacts. Many are facsimiles because the originals can only be exposed to light periodically...  more »
  • Smetana is go. Or or the score at the time. Danube hotel is close to the Charles Bridge. Just people, too, said there was no one. And at the first Prague should go if you love classic. Maybe taxes are up, so admission was cheap.

  • The entrance is very difficult to understand. Go to the terrace of the Cafe and I finally found out. It is a simple Museum. Lent the assistance of Japan. I'd really like Smetana.

  • As you cross over Charles Bridge you will not miss this beautiful museum that is dedicated to the life and works of famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana Exhibits include copies of letters, photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to Smetana’s life as well as various personal possessions. There are also folders on music stands which contain material about some of Smetana’s most famous works.
  • Quite a small museum, but charming. At the entry you are given an information file in which you can read about his life and career. In the pink room, you must stand at the conductor's podium and use the baton to activate several pieces of music. It is purely magic how the music fills the room. Begin with "My country". The entry fee is modest, 2 euros, but so is the musem. Remember: look out the windows!
  • This is an excellent museum on the banks of the river with good displays about the life of this composer. The staff are really friendly and helpful. That said, dad this museum is really on a specialised subject, the main interest for tourists will be the paintings on the external walls, which are quite amazing.
  • A great legacy Czech people should be proud of. Very helpful and classy staff :)
  • Fabulous museum. Beautiful Petrof grand piano available for visitors!
