Pilsner Urquell Brewery, Pilsen

4.6
#1 of 15 in Breweries in Czech Republic
Discover the birthplace of pilsner beer at Pilsner Urquell Brewery, located less than an hour southwest of Prague. Dating back to the 1840s, the brewery is the country's biggest exporter of domestically produced beer. Guided tours, the only way to enter the brewery, reveal the origins of the world-famous lager, produced for nearly 170 years using a recipe originally created by Bavarian master brewer Josef Groll. The tour offers you a chance to see the brewery's bottling plant and historical cellars, where you can taste unfiltered and unpasteurized pilsner beer poured from oak barrels. • The girl what had taken over the seating for the restaurant was totally überforderdert! The Resto was empty but it has no guests let, because of alleged booking (after repeated urge we have in the empty Resto then but get a table)... the waiter was "Top" very fast and friendly, the kitchen also (but food was cold) has tasted good. When we were finished with dinner, it was still empty... Sales prevention measures... There would be more in there with professionals... but not my problem definitely worth seeing... tasty beer 0, 5l €2, lunch also almost for free... very nice building... great courtyard... Old building complex... Very nice! We might also just caught the wrong day, it has played Viktoria Pilsen... ♂️

  • The tour is interesting and informative. It takes about 1 h 40. Work around the exhibition is well done with the emphasis on the industrial heritage in association with the new techniques. However, and this is where the big downside, we had to make the visit in German because none was planned in English this afternoon here. So for more than an hour we crossed the room and listened to a visit without understanding any word... The unique information in English or french were indicated either on the small documentation provided tables, plans, etc. Note: a beer tasting is offered during the visit of the cellars. In conclusion: a great outing If master you the Czech or German otherwise it is likely to be subdued, because you'll miss much of the interest of the visit...

  • If you switch from Pilsen or you are nearby don't miss this tour of the factory. There is also free parking on site, because outside I wouldn't have trusted to leave the car. ...

  • Came to Pilsen just for this tour and it didn't disappoint. It was a 5 minute walk from the train station, and the tour started right on time. The tour guide was helpful and knowledgeable, and the tour was interesting, especially if you have any interest in beer. At the end, it goes into the cellar where you're provided with a glass of unfiltered beer (refills available if you can drink fast enough). Highly recommended!
  • We did not pre-book a tour and upon our arrival on a Sunday in October the next German and English tours were each full so we had to wait a bit to get on a free tour. We ended up taking an English tour with our guide named George. He was a great tour guide and conveyed the tour in a very interesting and detailed manner. The tour included the bottling and packaging, the two brew houses and even part of the extensive cellar system with lots of interesting facts about the history od Pilsner Urquell, the brewing process and more. Also, we got to tasted a glass of unfiltered beer. I would definitely recommend the tour and hope you get a tour guide as great as George :-)
  • The brewery is huge and they have clearly made an investment in a world class tour experience. But our guide was impatient and unable to answer some of our questions. On the Sunday we went, the canning/bottling lines were shutdown for maintenance, which while understandable was disappointing (and not apparent when we booked the tour). As someone who enjoys craft beers and has visited many breweries, the lack of some information is surprising. Why did we taste the unfiltered beer but not the filtered beer? Or try the highly touted local water? Recommend visiting if you have a chance as the tour through the cellars is very cool and the history is long and interesting.
  • A brilliant, detailed tour that's very well set up. Excellent tour guide (Tomas) who delivered all the information clearly and in a very good manner. Definitely do this if you're in Pilsen
  • Loved the tour. The tasting was the unfiltered icing on the cake. Great beer and great story.
