Discover the birthplace of pilsner beer at Pilsner Urquell Brewery, located less than an hour southwest of Prague. Dating back to the 1840s, the brewery is the country's biggest exporter of domestically produced beer. Guided tours, the only way to enter the brewery, reveal the origins of the world-famous lager, produced for nearly 170 years using a recipe originally created by Bavarian master brewer Josef Groll. The tour offers you a chance to see the brewery's bottling plant and historical cellars, where you can taste unfiltered and unpasteurized pilsner beer poured from oak barrels. • I was surprised at how great this tour was. I wasn't the biggest fan of Pilsner Urquell until I took the tour and found out how much work goes into making this refreshing beer. The tour was great and incredibly informative. It ends with a tour of the lagering tunnels under the grounds of the brewery which will blow your mind. Well worth the nominal fee for the tour, and an easy stop-over on your way to Prague.
  • Cool to see it, the grounds are nice and the place is huge. The local restaurant here is similar to the same chain in Prague. Food and service were good, beer was better :)
  • The first half of the tour is similar to a standard brewery tour, however the trip down into the 19th century cellar was something special, especially the part where you get to try the unfiltered beer straight from the barrel!
  • If you are touring Prague, then the town of Plzeň is worth diverting to. The Czech people consume more beer per capita than any other country, sorry Deutchland, you were second. The Pilsner Urquell Brewery can help you occupy a few hours of your day and teach you the origin of the Pilsner variety of beer and why it came about. The tour of the Urquell compound was super. Getting to taste their pilsner direct from a massive wooden barrel, at its peak of freshness was the highlight of my tour, the delicious lunch from their restaurant was a very close second. The souvenir shop sells neat 5 liter kegs of the golden brew for home consumption, it's self contained all you need is a cold glass to fill. I'll be back.
  • Really well organised, interesting and educational guided tour which covers all aspects of the brewing process. Recommended
