Pernstejn Castle, Nedvedice

Pernštejn Castle is a castle on a rock above the village of Nedvědice and the rivers Svratka and Nedvědička, some 40km northwest of Brno, in the South Moravian Region, Czech Republic. Pernštejn came to be known as the marble castle because of the marble-like stone used to frame the doors and windows. It was founded by the Lords of Medlov probably between 1270–1285. The family branch seated at the castle and adopted the then fashionable name Pernštejn, which is the Czech version probably derived of the German name, Bärenstein – the "Bear Rock". Its history is closely connected to the Lords of Pernštejn and their descendants. It has kept its intact appearance in the Gothic and Renaissance form as it was finished in the first half of the 16th century by the Pernštejns, then the richest and most powerful lordly family of the Czech kingdom. Pernštejn is one of the best preserved castles in Czech Republic.

  • We visited with the family of my childhood-Castle Pernstejn. From childhood, many things have changed-you can arrive to the Castle "on the train" at the Castle it is possible to choose between several sightseeing routes. I chose the longest, and neither I nor the family we will not regret.

  • Really liked the atmosphere. The Castle stands on the mountain, climbing path from the car park. All such ancient and compulsory to attend. Recommend. Beer by the way known. So I recommend.

  • Castle well kept, placed by classic sightseeing, but well, overall. Very reminiscent of the fairytale castles. Guided tour interesting, even though it was only driving in Czech and other languages you had to adapt to read tabs.

  • Very nice castle. I recommend leaving the car at the parking lot under the hill and walk to the castle. It is about 20 minutes through the woods. The castle is large with quite a lot of rooms and other interiors. The 2 hour tour can be rather exhausting, so take it only if you are really interested in this kind of things, otherwise opt for one of the shorter tours.
  • Must visit. Went for a medieval fair, and took a tour of the castle and grounds. Beautiful.
  • Nice castle, but the facilities were not well-maintained. There was no water in the restrooms when we were there.
  • Book your tour beforehand, park your car and go to the castle by ecotrain. The castle is one of the oldest in the world actually, and really beautiful. Lots of movies were shot there. You can take pictures (no flash use though), and you get English sheet with information. You can also have (more expensive) English tour, ordered before.
  • One of the most beautiful castles in CR and one of my favorite; the scenery takes you back in time.....
