The Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora is a religious building at the edge of Žďár nad Sázavou, Czech Republic, near the historical border between Moravia and Bohemia. It is the final work of Jan Santini Aichel, a Bohemian architect who combined the Borrominiesque Baroque with references to Gothic elements in both construction and decoration. In 1719, when the Roman Catholic Church declared the tongue of John of Nepomuk to be incorruptible, work started to build a church at Zelená hora, where the future saint had received his early education. It was consecrated immediately after John's beatification in 1720, although construction works lumbered on until 1727. Half a century later, after a serious fire, the shape of the roof was altered. The church, with many furnishings designed by Santini himself, is remarkable for its gothicizing features and complex symbolism, quite unusual for the time. In 1993, it was declared a World Heritage Site. The nomination dossier pointed out Santini's mathematical ratios in its architecture which aimed at "the creation of an independent spatial reality", with "the number 5 being dominant in the layout and proportions" of the church.

  • Pilgrimage Church, John of Nepomuk on Green Mountain is located near the town of Zdar nad Sazavou, a short distance from the motorway D1/E65 linking Prague-Brno-Vienna, approximately 160 km. from Prague. The Church is among the most original and unusual Church Christian structures and on the right is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Church is located on top of a green hill and bezlesnogo is perfectly visible from the road. According to Czech standards Church is relatively young as was consecrated in the year 1722 in honor of St. John of Nepomuk. Construction of the Cathedral was led by architect Jan Santini-Ajhl and funded the cisterianskogo monks of the monastery. By the way, the Church itself was part of the monastery and was used for worship. However, with the abolition of the monastery in Zdar nad Sazavou as worship is almost never used and now functions as a museum. Visit the Church can only be composed of participants for the tour group. However, this does not make special work, as tours are conducted fairly regularly-in the tourist season every hour. We came to Green Mountain almost evening almost never hoped to get inside and assumed just explore the Church outside. But we were lucky and we hit on the last tour. Church gives the impression of strangeness and mystery. Dedication Of St. Jan Nepomuk, which is one of the symbols of the five-pointed star (according to legend, five-pointed stars ascended nad Vltavou in the place of his death) led to the unusual star-shape of the Cathedral and its surrounding fence. The Church is built in the form of a five-pointed star in the Baroque style. In the architecture of the Cathedral, the number five is repeated many times. 5 in the Cathedral entrances, altar has 5 NIS-on the master five stars and five angels who ascended into heaven, the martyr on the side altars-4 evangelist. The upper tier of the Cathedral is decorated with 10 (two times five) Baroque chapels. Tours are held in the Church in the Czech language for foreign visitors have a printout with information about the Cathedral is sufficiently detailed and correct. Photography is permitted in the Cathedral than actively use customers. Around the Cathedral is located the ancient cemetery, most of which are family burials. Very interesting photos of Church are obtained through arched openings of the fence. In addition, with one of the parties the Church enclosure, offers stunning views of the castle town of Zdar, konventnyj Church, built in the same way Santini-Ajhlom and the Castle pond. Zdar Castle is still owned by the Kinský family and certainly worth a visit and a separate story.
