Saint Barbara's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Kutná Hora in the style of a Cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara . It is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners, which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines.Construction began in 1388, but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler. Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler, assumed responsibility. The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the three-peaked roof had been completed, and a provisional wall was constructed. A little later it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.

Lovely and worth the price of admission you pay to see all three churches in Kutna Hora, but the other two churches put this one to shame. Has a lovely spiral staircase though.  more »

It is worth visiting it. A wonderful setting for an impressive basílica. In its interior exudes spirituality.

Very pleasant visit. With less than 100 czk you can visit the cathedral. They give you a text detailing the most interesting points. The visit can take you from 30 mins to one hour. Depending how fast you are appreciating the details. Be aware that they do not accept credit card to pay the entrance ticket.

Absolutely gorgeous, and much bigger than I expected! The inside is remarkable, but the outside views of Kutna Hora can't be beat either. A must-see! Go early to beat the crowds of tourists.

Beautiful cathedral inside & out. As it was not too touristy, inside the cathedral was quite and peaceful when I entered. Loved the ceiling! There is a small gift shop next to the restroom and they sell lots of nice stuff but only accept Czech Koruna. No euro! Pls don't argue with the staff at the cashier and have some local currency when you travel!

Beautiful church with stunning stain glass windows and frescos. A lot of history and detail provided at the church and entrance fee is cheap (student discount available!). Not too crowded so plenty of time to absorb everything. A highlight of Kutna Hora and definitely more worthwhile than the ossuary.

Beatiful gothic church. You are able to go upstairs and view from above. Lots of beautiful stained glass windows. 85kc to get into the church and 25kc to get up stairs.

Where to stay in Kutna Hora

A World Heritage Site and one of Czech Republic's most picturesque towns, Kutna Hora doesn't offer a huge number of places to stay, but you can still find charming hotels and guesthouses. Because it's a relatively small town, you don't have to worry too much about location; nearly everything is within walking distance. However, for those who prefer to stay outside town, consider a countryside guesthouse or campground.
