Saint Barbara's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Kutná Hora in the style of a Cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara . It is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners, which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines.Construction began in 1388, but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler. Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler, assumed responsibility. The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the three-peaked roof had been completed, and a provisional wall was constructed. A little later it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.

  • Kutna Hora. Many artistic masterpieces adorn the interior, dating as early as 1734 and earlier. The spire is an area landmark. Buy the multi-church ticket.  more »
  • This is the tallest church in Kutna Hora and we had hoped to climb its square tower but unfortunately the church was closed when we visited and exterior has some scaffolding covering the frontage  more »
  • We saw the Church only from the outside but well worth seeing if you still pass it on the way down to the old town. Beautiful view on the way down from St. Barbara katdedralen here.

  • Beautiful cathedral inside & out. As it was not too touristy, inside the cathedral was quite and peaceful when I entered. Loved the ceiling! There is a small gift shop next to the restroom and they sell lots of nice stuff but only accept Czech Koruna. No euro! Pls don't argue with the staff at the cashier and have some local currency when you travel!
  • Pretty cool church and the highlight of my visit in Kutna Hora. At first I was awed by the size of the church from the outside. It was just so massive even from a distance and I was excited to go there. At the entrance you have to pay a small fee and while this is disappointing, it's worth it. The church looks really fancy on the inside. They these fabulous images on the windows. However; the best part of the inside of the church was the size, amazing. If you have to pay a little more, you can go to the second floor. I'd say that that was the best part. They have a few neat statues there and these massive paintings. There's also a balcony with a view of the city, but this was closed when I visited so I can't say whether you can go there. They also give you a paper with extra information about the palace, which is nice.
  • A stunning building from the inside and the outside. There are lots of details inside that are worth taking the time to find. You'll see the exterior architecture from different parts of the city but the real charm is the interior.
  • ...Wow! What an Amazing Fine Piece of Architectural Beaut-ii! Taking into consideration that it took almost 517 years to complete with wars and all in between! Styled in two types of work name-lii Baroque & Gothic! I always get Goose Bumps when I find myself in an Awesome places like this and I most times ask myself ?? "Were these structure built or created??" The magnificence of the craftsmanship is absolutely intriguing. A must visit when in this part of the Czech Republic.......

Where to stay in Kutna Hora

A World Heritage Site and one of Czech Republic's most picturesque towns, Kutna Hora doesn't offer a huge number of places to stay, but you can still find charming hotels and guesthouses. Because it's a relatively small town, you don't have to worry too much about location; nearly everything is within walking distance. However, for those who prefer to stay outside town, consider a countryside guesthouse or campground.
