Špilberk Castle, Brno
(4.3/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
At Špilberk Castle, walk through the dark dungeons where common criminals as well as state prisoners, such as Italian nationalists or opponents of the Hapsburg monarchy, spent years of confinement. The 13th-century fortress, which rises up on a steep slope next to the historical center of the city, is a popular place for walks and relaxation. Over the centuries, the castle has served as the seat of the Moravian margraves, a fortress, and military barracks. Now it is home to the valuable collections of the city museum, which give insight into the history of the castle as the famous "prison of nations." Make Špilberk Castle a centerpiece of your Brno vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Brno tour planner.

  • Dripping in history, wonderfully looked after and written guides in English and other languages. We spent a good 3 hours and could have spent longer. Wonderful exhibitions telling the history which is both intriguing and disturbing. There are also some gorgeous temporary art galleries and installations. The cafe is good value too - the grog comes recommended!
  • Amazing view, can see most of the city. It's nice and calm at day time. Good place for an evening stroll or go for a run 🏃
  • Nice walk up to the top with great views of the city and cathedral. Not much to see in the sense of a castle. More like a walled perimeter with buildings inside. There is a museum of torture here.
  • Spilberk castle is not what I would describe as a castle, it was more like a fortress. Nevertheless, you had a gorgeous view over Brno, and it is a nice stroll around the so called castle. The park is lovely and you can take countless of routes to go up to the castle. (You do have to pay to see the torture-chambers.) Overall, I enjoyed the views but the castle itself wasn't breathtaking.
  • A good museum located inside the castle. They had books on the walls of the rooms with translations for the displays into English, which was nice since I don't speak Czech. If you aren't interested in the museum, the fortress offers good views of the city, and the surrounding park is pleasant to stroll through.
