Church of Profitis Elias, Protaras

4.8
#1 of 33 in Sightseeing in Famagusta District
Church Tourist Spot
With a typical orthodox interior that features biblical images on walls and ceilings, Church of Profitis Elias stands above towns and valleys overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. You'll need to climb some 150 stairs to reach this small stone church with one dome and a bell tower, built in Byzantine style. Visitors often tie a piece of cloth or a ribbon to a nearby tree, signifying a remembrance of a loved one. At the top, you'll be 100 m (330 ft) above area surroundings with expansive views of the bay bellow. Be sure to take water with you, as the climb can be tiring. Where to stay in Protaras

Although a compact city, Protaras offers a wide range of hotels. Luxury hotels tend to be close to the picturesque beaches and offer their own restaurants, bars, and swimming pools. Holiday rentals offer a more economical option and are plentiful here. However, those interested in a large villas may have to compromise on location, as these can be a considerable distance from the seaside and the resort's most popular attractions. But when your accommodations is equipped with a kitchen, pool, and hot tub, you may have little reason to leave the property.

  • What a lovely church. Only takes a few minutes to climb the steps but well worth it as the views are amazing. There's plenty of shade under trees and a little shack that sells souvenirs and cold drinks to be found! Worth the visit!
  • Quite a few steps needed to get up to the church (not demanding). Church is small but nice, view is nice around.
  • 11th JULY 2016 - The best moment of my life, i asked my beautiful girlfriend to marry me and she said yes!!!! Such a happy day and amazing holiday!!! This church is beautiful, we watched the sunset then in front of the arched doors i got down on one knee (to take a photo of Natalie) i then put the camera away and took out the ring, i asked and she said yes! it was such a romantic setting and perfect moment. People who saw cheered and clapped. The view is amazing and very close to the town and two good hotels, the Mandalena hotel and the artemis hotel appartments.
  • A relatively sedate walk up quite a few steps to this tiny little gem of a Church. A beautiful building commanding spectacular views of the Protaras coastline.
  • Very nice view, this church is situated in the hill above the village.
