Blue Lagoon, Paphos

4.7
#16 of 47 in Outdoors in Paphos
Named in 2012 as one of National Geographic's “25 Wonders of the World," Blue Lagoon has evolved from its infancy as a reservoir of geothermal runoff into a world of geothermal wonder.

The unique properties of its waters provide not only an enchanting lagoon experience, but also the patented, active ingredients in Blue Lagoon skin care: silica, algae, and minerals.

Blue Lagoon is located in a sprawling, 800 year old lava field in the heart of the Reykjanes Peninsula – a UNESCO Geopark. Just 20 minutes from Keflavík International Airport and 50 minutes from Reykjavík, Blue Lagoon is simultaneously remote and easily accessible.

  • Cyprus is interesting, depending on the location, the water in the sea may be different in its beauty. Beautiful lagoon in the vast territory was intersected area of Ayia Napa, we have already seen, but it turned out that on the other end of the island there are no less beautiful. The Blue Lagoon is just that place. You can get there from Pathos or Lachi (Lathi) by purchasing one of the many cruise ships. Cruises are popular not only with tourists, but among the locals. The whole trip takes about three hours: two hours to deliver you to the paradise place and hour to swim in the beautiful waters. Depending on the ship you can offer (and may or may not offer) snorkinga equipment, and after a walk-a compliment from the captain as watermelon and homemade wine. Recommend book places on the ship either through travel agents or directly with the owners of the vessels/cruises.

  • As in the name, the blue lagoon has the cleanest, bluest water I have ever seen, the place is a must see whilst in Cyprus, swimming in there is lovely, me and my 13 year old son really enjoyed it, I w...  more »
  • We did this via 4x4 never again. The road is terrible and dangerous. The lagoon is a must see place so we will go back but via boat next time. It's not a big place and had lots of tourist when we were...  more »

  • Just incredible, hired a boat from latchi and went up the coast stopping off to swim and snorkel. The most amazing crystal clear water. Probably best to avoid the tour boats as they drop off a few times a day and it can become very busy.
  • Beautiful place! You can reach it by foot, with a 4W drive or renting a buggy/off road car. The place is 6km from the Aphrodite bath's but the road is bumpy, better not to destroy your car. On the way there are other beautiful spots and the nature around is stunning
  • The place is wonderful for snorkeling and swimming. We got there with our rented 4x4 Toyota and it was quite nerve wrecking experience driving that rocky narrow mountain path (road). But it was worth it! Spent good 2-3 hours away from the tourist hordes.
  • We went there as our last stop from a jeep tour. We used the boat to reach the spot but we also saw some guys with quads and cars there. If you can handle the cliffs you can do this as well. The water was very blue and very clear! Very nice place to visit!
  • Really worth the trip! We traveled with the Mediterranean One, it was a beautiful tour (in a glass bottom boat!) and a very welcome relief from the extreme Cypriot summer heat. Water depth at the lagoon is about 2 meters, if you swim about 15 meters landwards you should be able to stand. Pro-tip: skip the early and noon tour and take the 5 pm one instead. Way less people, much more relaxed and much cooler. Snorkels, masks and vests available free of charge. Free wine, juice and melons and the friendliest staff ever! 10/10 would do again.

Where to stay in Paphos

A vacation favorite, Paphos is equipped with a wide range of accommodations to cater to its scores of visitors. Beachside hotels are plentiful, with many located in the bustling Kato Pafos neighborhood. Bed and breakfasts tend be farther from the sea but offer heaps of character as well as good value for money. If you're planning a longer stay in the city, consider renting a villa. These vary considerably in amenities and price, with many of the larger properties located in Paphos' scenic outskirts.
