#9 of 18 in Museums in Nicosia
The Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios Mansion is situated near the Archbishopric, in the neighbourhood of Saint Antonios in Nicosia, Cyprus, where the wealthy notables of the Greek community traditionally used to live.OverviewThe mansion is the most important example of urban architecture of the last century of Ottoman rule that survives in old Nicosia. It opened on 3 May 1960 with the aid of public subscription, three years after a foundation was established to protect the property from developers who wanted to demolish the block.History of the houseThe owner of the mansion, Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, was a dragoman, the official interpreter for the Divan (Council) of the Sultan for thirty years from 1779. This title, which was one of the most prestigious titles given to the local Christians by the Ottoman authorities, gave the opportunity to Kornesios to accumulate huge wealth and power. His power brought jealousy to his enemies, who cunningly managed to have him beheaded on 31 March 1809 in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). The house was built in 1793 with local bloc-cut sandstone and is a two-storey building. The monogram of the owner and the date of its erection can be seen on a marble tablet inside the entrance. The architectural plan of the building in the form of a Greek "Π" surrounds a central garden with a fountain and a private bathhouse (Hammam) which has three rooms. On the ground floor the servants’ quarters and the kitchen were situated. Roofed wooden stairs with a stone base lead to the entrance hall on the first floor from the courtyard. The official reception room and the living areas communicated with this reception hall. The official reception room (the onda), at the end of the east wing, differs from the other rooms with its exceptional carved wooden, gilded and painted decoration, which liken it to other official reception rooms in many mansions of the Ottoman Empire.

  • In the pedestrian route that allows to discover the old town of Nicosia, must stop in the old patrician House. The superposition of different architectural styles, the small private hamam, available to the garden and the rooms in the building transport us in a world of the past very different from that of Western Europeans.

  • Very beautiful historic building. The rooms feature high ceilings, rooms, hidden doors, the old objects to travel at another time. Discovered accidentally during our walk to the old town. The residents were affluent and that you understand easily with your entry on the site. Hadjigeorgakis Kornessios also was dragoymanos, interpreter of the portal, very high office for his time. The building was inhabited until 1979.

  • The former House of the rich (judging from the inventories of estates) Greek Dragoman (interpreter like). The most interesting-18-19 century interiors on the first floor. Something you can hold, sit on something. There is room for a photo. There are almost no people. Entrance, like, 3 euros.

  • Interesting representation of architecture, culture and history.
  • Excellent example of 18th century house!
  • For a mere 2 euros you can walk through the traditional Mansion; the indoors garden, baths and all rooms of the historic building. Every artifact on display has a tag in both greek end english.
  • Great
  • A beautiful Museum with fun there with friends trawled for about an hour, all watched. Interesting things were long ago, the inhabitants of Cyprus. It's worth a look

Where to stay in Nicosia

Despite being the country's capital, Nicosia is not as geared toward tourists as the resorts on Cyprus' sunny coast. Hotels tend to be geared toward business travelers but provide a comfortable stay. Renting a vacation apartment may be preferable option for many, as they enable you to live more like locals. The greater Nicosia area spreads far and wide, so stay near the old city to access the most popular attractions, bars, and restaurants on foot. For an economical option, look for lodging on the north side of the city.
