  • We stumbled upon this cathedral when we were strolling around Ledra street. It is a very beautiful cathedral.  more »
  • Very small but nice from the outside. Unfortunately we could not get in, as it wasn't open at 16.30 on a weekday. Conserning size, it is very noteworthy that the archbishop's palace is at least 10 tim...  more »
  • Immediately Tip: visit the Church best with a guide, because without history and facts, you hardly seem interesting this church. And even strict dress code inside, cover the exposed shoulders, knees, take pictures and cannot shoot. Fine and strict control over it. The Cathedral itself is located in the old town, on Cypriot territory in a very beautiful area, where a number of the Museum at the Cathedral, the Archbishop's residence opposite the street school, library, and all this in a very well-kept condition. Inside the Cathedral has frescoes with exciting stories, icons, can put a candle.

  • St John's Cathedral (Agios Ionnis), compared with the great cathedrals of Europe, is tiny. Its interior, however, is no less magnificent. It was built by Archbishop Nikiforos in 1662, on the site of the former Lusignan Benedictine Abbey of Saint John of Bibi (St John the Evangelist). "Bibi" is an abbreviation of the Arabic word "habibi", which means “beloved” and refers to Saint John as the beloved student of Christ. When the Benedictine Order left the island in 1426, as a result of the Mamluk raids, the monastery passed into Orthodox hands, and was dedicated to St John the Theologian, while remaining a monastery. Although the church is small compared with the other churches in Nicosia, It is the official state church. There is an ornate throne for the archbishop, complete with a magnificent Byzantine double-headed eagle. There are also places for the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek Ambassador. The coronation of new Archbishops of Cyprus takes place here.
  • Extremely beautiful.
  • Light in Hope
  • CYPRUS CHURCH
  • Cathedral of St. John the divine is a unique structure. Having a very modest exterior, shakes its internal decoration. In this place every year thousands of pilgrims.

Where to stay in Nicosia

Despite being the country's capital, Nicosia is not as geared toward tourists as the resorts on Cyprus' sunny coast. Hotels tend to be geared toward business travelers but provide a comfortable stay. Renting a vacation apartment may be preferable option for many, as they enable you to live more like locals. The greater Nicosia area spreads far and wide, so stay near the old city to access the most popular attractions, bars, and restaurants on foot. For an economical option, look for lodging on the north side of the city.
