The observatory is a very nice place to go to when visiting Lefkosia. Going in, there are wonderful drawings hanging on the wall of maps of the streets around. Very cute. To get up top you go up in a ...  more »

This is the place to visit if you want to see the whole of Nicosia. It is interesting to see the old and new. There is a lot of information available regarding the places you can see from there, and a...  more »

The museum was lovely - simply explaining the history of Nicosia and telling you about everything that you could see from the observatory. The person who worked there brought me binoculars so I could ...  more »

Although some reviewers don't rate it highly this is an interesting experience. On the 11th floor of the old Woolies/Debenhams store which is now rundown and mostly empty ( even the coffee shop on the sixth floor is no more) for just €2.50 per person you will get an amazing view of the divided city and the land beyond. Worth a trip.

Had the luck of taking two groups of colleagues from abroad, for a Nicosia within the walls tour. This was a must stop at the beginning for many reasons: First: It's right beside the green line and that makes it the most central viewpoint to see the old town, both sides of it. Second: It gives you perspective, as to which monument you visit next is where. Third: The interactive displays fill in the blanks on many of the monuments and in various languages. You can only translate so much and not everybody speaks English or Greek so they can understand you. Fourth: You can see the tower from almost everywhere in the old town, so you are never lost. Price is not too much for what it is.

Could be more… Should be more. Although on the 11th floor of the tallest building in the vicinity, Nicosia offers neither the breathtaking views nor any really exceptional architectural significance from abouv. Yes, some history is recited on tape, and in several languages, and yes, there are binoculars to view any details of the buildings by one's own preference. No, it's nowhere near as much as any picturesque/historic European capital or even just an architecturally uniform one, or at least green... And that doesn't reflect the relatively rich history of the place (the city has been continuously inhabited for over 4500 years, for instance) which is deliberately and conveniently obliterated in its entirety, with mere references to more ideologically ‘important’ areas, while stressing useless and trivial dates and times... Not worth it really. You can get all these references and history (with professional photography to back it up) online. I'm sorry to say that Google in this case seems to provide a richer experience, although neither Google, nor especially the Tower even closely represent the beauty and vastness of the diverse multi-layered multi-composed and multi-cultural history that reflects the city's exciting past. 2 stars only because it offers a high vista.

You get to the observatory by a side street entrance to Debenhams. It is at the top of what is officially called the Shakolas tower, but still widely known as the Woolworths building. There a lift will take you straight to the 11th floor, via a rather nice coffee shop if you are so inclined. The observatory is not all that big, but it does have good views all round, and you can see how the city has been extensively developed to the south since 1974. As well as photos of Nicosia, there is an audio visual display of the history of the city. It has to be said, that the tape does need updating. It still refers to the barricades at the end of Ledra Street, a crossing that has been opened since April 2008.

If you go to Nicosia and you don't visit this observatory......you will have to go again because it is awesome, you can see the whole city.

Where to stay in Nicosia

Despite being the country's capital, Nicosia is not as geared toward tourists as the resorts on Cyprus' sunny coast. Hotels tend to be geared toward business travelers but provide a comfortable stay. Renting a vacation apartment may be preferable option for many, as they enable you to live more like locals. The greater Nicosia area spreads far and wide, so stay near the old city to access the most popular attractions, bars, and restaurants on foot. For an economical option, look for lodging on the north side of the city.
