Trip Planner:   Europe  /  Cyprus  /  Nicosia District  /  Nicosia  /  Buyuk Han
An old Ottoman roadside inn, Buyuk Han has a mosque in its courtyard, and several art galleries within its walls. Built in 1572, it served as a prison during the British colonization era, and became a hostel for the poor in 1893. The complex stands two stories tall, and has 68 rooms and 10 shops. You'll see a mosque at the center of the courtyard, erected on marble piers. Browse through quaint shops all around the site, which sell spices, sweets, and souvenirs. Check out some of the restaurants and cafes, which have been built to fit in with the traditional feel of the place. • It was such A NICE experience for being there where historical and shopping venues can meddle. I met a boutique seller which was a former teacher and whom I had a great talk with, and she gave me really good prices for some cute accessories about Northern Cyprus. Mostly the sellers are so friendly that you'd better do not hesitate to ask questions to or have some random chat with. There are so many shop/boutique options so find the best place that offers best prices. I'd recommend the woman I've told earlier 😁
  • Not the most friendly staff but food is good and the view around Büyük Han is amazing. Very reasonably food prices (for someone coming from the U.S.). Would come again!
  • Nice place for dining and chatting with friends. Different traditional dishes
  • Really interesting. Well worth a look
  • Historic and in fantastic condition. Once used as a place of rest for travelers on camel and horse houses shops and serves authentic Turkish food.

Where to stay in Nicosia

Despite being the country's capital, Nicosia is not as geared toward tourists as the resorts on Cyprus' sunny coast. Hotels tend to be geared toward business travelers but provide a comfortable stay. Renting a vacation apartment may be preferable option for many, as they enable you to live more like locals. The greater Nicosia area spreads far and wide, so stay near the old city to access the most popular attractions, bars, and restaurants on foot. For an economical option, look for lodging on the north side of the city.
