Buyuk Han, Nicosia
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
An old Ottoman roadside inn, Buyuk Han has a mosque in its courtyard, and several art galleries within its walls. Built in 1572, it served as a prison during the British colonization era, and became a hostel for the poor in 1893. The complex stands two stories tall, and has 68 rooms and 10 shops. You'll see a mosque at the center of the courtyard, erected on marble piers. Browse through quaint shops all around the site, which sell spices, sweets, and souvenirs. Check out some of the restaurants and cafes, which have been built to fit in with the traditional feel of the place. I tend to stop here for a couple of beers whenever I'm in North Nicosia. As a structure, the Caravansary is nothing short of impressive. There's certainly an atmosphere of 'History' to the place that's hard to put into actual words. On a more contemporary note, you'll find a number of cafes and bars on the ground floor, with the upper level being devoted to souvenir and art sales. If you're into fine sculpture and you're lucky in your timing, you might find the gallery of Sevcan Cerkez open. Her life-size and lifelike sculptures have won a great many awards and are worth seeing. If you're in this part of the city, stopping at Büyük Han is a must.
Very impressive building housing a few eateries and a lot of craft stalls

Great restoration and worth the visit to North Nicosia
Local crafts made by individuals about thirty different little shops. Great freshly squeezed pomegranate juice at the west entrance.
