Buyuk Han, Nicosia

(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
An old Ottoman roadside inn, Buyuk Han has a mosque in its courtyard, and several art galleries within its walls. Built in 1572, it served as a prison during the British colonization era, and became a hostel for the poor in 1893. The complex stands two stories tall, and has 68 rooms and 10 shops. You'll see a mosque at the center of the courtyard, erected on marble piers. Browse through quaint shops all around the site, which sell spices, sweets, and souvenirs. Check out some of the restaurants and cafes, which have been built to fit in with the traditional feel of the place. Put Buyuk Han into our Nicosia family vacation planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Nicosia.

  • Lots of local craft work for sale with a nice coffee bar or two serving European and Turkish coffee with pastries - and nobody hassles you.  more »
  • In the course of my Cyprus tour I inserted here a ban. The former Caravanserai is located in the Turkish part of Nicosia and not far from the pedestrian passage. Many small shops and cafes here give a super charm. Here you can spend very much time. Can I recommend.

  • On the lower floor there are several cafés, above in the Gallery many small shops. Here you can beautiful handmade souvenirs (especially embroideries, pictures from silk cocoons, and spices) to buy. It's worth a detour!

  • Most well-ordered looking place in the old town. It is so nice sitting inside as recognition to its genuine purpous of guest housing. It might looses its concept of oriental flavor in the mixture of colourful tourist groups but it can be found again visiting it twice. Great place to meet people
  • This is the nicest bit of Turkish architecture on the island - an original caravansary with colonnades and a tiny mosque in the center. On the ground floor are some handicraft shops and a good restaurant, called Sedirhan. The upper, colonnaded floor is occupied by dozens of small arts and crafts shops; each with their own specialty. Lunch and an amble around the Buyuk Han's shops is a great way to while away a few peaceful hours, away from the traffic and crowds of N.Nicosia.
  • The kebap was not anything special. The toilettes were out of this place, in a neighbouring building, very dirty and disgusting
  • Beautiful building and space. Very nice place to relax and perhaps enjoy a drink or some food.
  • Picturesque and historic little enclave in the middle of Lefkosa. Great to browse the boutiques and eat at the bars.
