Limassol Castle, Limassol

3.9
#1 of 10 in Museums in Limassol
Nestled right among upbeat cafes and restaurants, Limassol Castle stands tall, reminiscent of the days of the Byzantine Kingdom, Lusignan rulers, and King Richard the Lionheart. Believed to have been built over an early Christian basilica, the present-day edifice dates back to the year 1590. Burned and looted by the Genoese, the Egyptians, and the Venetians, and shaken by powerful earthquakes, the castle was finally rebuilt by the Ottomans and served as a prison until 1950. Today you can visit a medieval museum inside the castle, with exhibits depicting the economic, social, and cultural development of Cyprus from the 3rd to the 18th century. • Absolutely worth seeing buildings, with many artifacts and showcases. The complete system is very well kept and well maintained! Worth a visit for lovers of historic buildings in any case! Also in the immediate vicinity there are many restaurants and bars. Only on parking lots are lacking here, you must be running as a piece...

  • Besides the stone works and carvings on the grounds, there is also a life sized model of an olive press. It's fun for a casual stroll, a history lesson, or as a couple.  more »
  • The castle is pretty and is located not far from the city center, recommended for those who want to explore something different from the classic Beach, nice view from the top

  • Best place to buy souvenir, there is a big souvenir shops at the roundabout selling very nice shells for who are interested. This place is close to Marina. One if the best fish restaurant ( in my idea)is also located at this area.
  • In the summer it's incredibly hot inside. The castle is quite small, and there are only two levels to be visited. On top, you may get to see a view of Limassol, but the walls are quite high thus the "view" is reduced.
  • If you are in Limassol, definitely worth seeing an hour will cover it pretty well and it is pretty cheap. Near the old port, lots of good bars and restaurants nearby so you can incorporate it into a day trip without a lot of walking.
  • A small castle keep that houses the arciological museum. The latest ottoman building is built on top of older structures. They have very little focus on the building... And that's what I wanted to see. No audio guide, no placards, almost seem like they ignored the structure and focused only on the collection. €4.5 to get in. Maybe good if you are more into artifacts, they have some cool stuff. But if you want to learn about the castle history you risk getting disappointed.
  • Exhibits are in especially well preserved condition. People with mobility problems will have difficulty in exploring the castle.
