Limassol Castle, Limassol

3.9
#1 of 11 in Museums in Limassol
Nestled right among upbeat cafes and restaurants, Limassol Castle stands tall, reminiscent of the days of the Byzantine Kingdom, Lusignan rulers, and King Richard the Lionheart. Believed to have been built over an early Christian basilica, the present-day edifice dates back to the year 1590. Burned and looted by the Genoese, the Egyptians, and the Venetians, and shaken by powerful earthquakes, the castle was finally rebuilt by the Ottomans and served as a prison until 1950. Today you can visit a medieval museum inside the castle, with exhibits depicting the economic, social, and cultural development of Cyprus from the 3rd to the 18th century. • Do not go on an organised trip here as entry is a few euros and not very big. Interesting and everything well maintained and in order. Beautiful views from the top as well across the town.  more »

  • Worth a short visit to the castle and a laid back visit to the square. Not many restaurants open at present (off season) but great sun and beer
  • Small fort type building. Well kept with some very old artifacts. Entrance Staff was very rude didn't seem able to speak let alone say hello, thank you or goodbye, just slammed change down without a word.
  • A really nice exhibition and nice view from the top. All the explanations are also in English. The admission rates are 4.5 Euros for an adult and none for children. The castle is quite small and was closed on Saturday afternoon when we got there. The walls are rather uninteresting from the outside. Centrally located and surrounded by restaurants and cafes. A tranquil place to wander around or sit for a meal or coffee. No cars. Suitable for children who want to play around. Medical castle that has changed hands many times over the century. We arrived to late enter the castle - closed at 13:00 on Sunday. The castle is located in the old Turkish... Small compared to other castles which I have visited in other countries. However within the castle there is various items of interest to those who are interested in history. Worth a visit if you are in the area. A lot of history on this site. The castle was built over an early Christian basilica and a Byzantine monument. The castle as is today was rebuilt in 1590 under the Ottomans. A small fortress. Inside is a museum with a collection of medieval items from the area. You can climb inside the fortress between the basement and the roof, which opens a beautiful view to the whole city and the surrounding area. Entrance to the museum costs EUR 4.5 per person. Worth the price.
  • Best place to buy souvenir, there is a big souvenir shops at the roundabout selling very nice shells for who are interested. This place is close to Marina. One if the best fish restaurant ( in my idea)is also located at this area.
  • Such a nice place especially during the evening and for a night out. Full of life and restaurants and cafes opened late at night with beautiful lighting around the castle to emphasise the ancient place and it does look great!
