Kourion, Limassol

4.7
#1 of 79 in Things to do in Limassol
Wander into Ancient Roman and Byzantine ruins at Kourion for a look at the remains of houses, monuments, markets, baths, and an intact 3,500-seat theater. Although the site had been inhabited in Neolithic times from five millennia BCE, the town is believed to date back to the 13th century BCE. It supported an uprising against Persia in the 4th century BCE and was used by Alexander the Great. See mosaic floors from the 3rd and 4th centuries CE, private residences of the rich dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries CE, and a 5th century CE early Christian basilica at the site. Like most sites on the island, beautifully groomed and maintained! Do not stop at mere tourist itinerary stops at the first two points of interest, you would lose the House of the Gladiators and more!

We went here about 10 years ago, so revisited with our now grown up children. It was 40 degrees unfortunately, but we managed to go all over the site. This place is interesting, but I feel that if you...  more »

Great place. Parking is free entry is 4,5€/ person. 11 different places too see, most of them quite big but all is interesting. Not much shades, so get protection and water with yoi. Well made place. Great view also to the see.

Fabulous archaeology (often in action) in an amazing setting... Add a visit to the small Kourion museum in the village nearby to give it context and it takes on a whole new level of meaning. Highlights.. The early Christian's house, who provided baths for the poor, and the earthquake house (especially if you've seen the remains of the young couple and their baby which were found under the rubble and which are now at the museum described above...).

On arrival at the gates pull over and pay €4.50 per adult visitor. Drive to the designated car park being careful of the blind summit on the way in. Private cars park beyond the coach park. The visitor centre has guide books and plans in various languages. Do pick up a plan at least or you will miss some of the sites. The 'best' mosaics have been placed under lam wood arches to protect them from the elements. Others have been covered over with sand to protect them. There is a restored theatre that stages performances from time to time. Most of the site is wheelchair accessible with ramps having been installed extensively.

Must visit this historic site. Entrance is less than 5 euros. There are vending machines and bathrooms available. Also a small souvenir shop. Take an umbrella and a lot of sun cream, the site is mostly uncovered. Absolutely beautiful views.

Lots of buildings from different periods over a broad area, good descriptions about each one and a great view over the sea and surrounding area. Most of the areas are quite accessible for people in a wheel chair. It's an open area, so take care in hot sunny days to take a hat and water to keep you hydrated.
